The Tohono O'odham Nation and Baboquivari Unified School District are working together to revitalize the Tohono O'odham language. The positions begin immediately after the BUSD Governing Board approves the recommendations.
We are excited about the learning our children will experience and we invite any TON member who are certified to teach the language to apply for the open positions. Our Himdag Director will be conducting interviews within the next two weeks! Please go to our website (you can add links here) to apply or stop by the district office.
SUMMARY
Prepare lesson plans and instruct students. Evaluate and monitor students' performance.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Valid Arizona Native American Language, PreK-12 - Tohono O'odham Teaching Certificate. Valid Arizona DPS IVP Fingerprint Card. Fluent in the Tohono O'odham language.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
THE LIST OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE AND MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED.
  • Teaching the Tohono O'odham language and culture to all students
  • Tohono O'odham language lessons that supply the student's with the concepts and diversity of the Native Culture
  • Students' reasoning is supported and their thinking skills are developed.
  • Support the pupil's integration into the 21st Century while respecting the Culture of the Elders.
  • Expand upon all aspects of the O'odham Culture
  • Teach song, dance, and history of the O'odham Culture
  • Perform all duties of classroom teacher including issuing grades, and other reports for parent and student information
  • Help all staff to understand and support the value of the O'odham Culture
  • Include Elders and other community members in classroom work as needed
  • Other duties as required by the site administrator and district office
  • Prepare lesson plans and instruct students in accordance with established curriculum and student needs.
  • Plan, organize, and display classroom materials appropriate to curricular activities.
  • Uses and implements classroom management techniques to maintain organization, orderliness, student safety, and a productive learning environment.
  • Plans instruction and implement instructional techniques to encourage and motivate students.
  • Evaluate students' performance regarding achievements in curriculum and activities. Make necessary provisions to meet learning needs.
  • Ensure parents and students are informed of methods of evaluation used in the classroom.
  • Participates as a member of an instructional team to promote learning activities for students, consistent with district and school education objectives.
  • Observe the behavior of children in the classroom and on the playground.
  • May monitor the activities of a teacher assistant and classroom volunteers.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Order classroom supplies and instructional materials.
MENTAL TASKS
Communicates - verbally and in writing. Reads. Analyze and evaluate student progress and course curriculum. Develop, implement, and evaluate plans. Manage classroom. Promotes learning and ensures safety. Perform functions from written and oral instructions and from observing and listening to others. Evaluate written materials to include written assignments and tests.
PHYSICAL TASKS
Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is not normally required to perform all aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, and requires moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, bending, and holding and grasping objects. Visual weakness must not prohibit the performance of assigned duties. Verbal communicative ability may be required of public contact positions.
EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS, MATERIALS
Uses whiteboard, bulletin board, instructional or office equipment, such as telephones, computers, copiers, and associated classroom technology.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Indoor - classroom environment. Outdoor - all weather conditions and temperatures. Contact with the public, employees, students, and parents.
CONTROL, SUPERVISION
Monitor control of students, volunteers, and/or assistants in the classroom, playground, field trips, lunchroom, library, school buses, and other areas.
