What is a weekend systems engineer?

A Weekend Systems Engineer is an IT professional responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting computer systems and networks during weekend hours. Their duties often include performing system updates, resolving technical issues, and ensuring the stability and security of IT infrastructure when regular staff may be unavailable. Weekend shifts are critical for organizations that require 24/7 uptime, such as data centers or companies with global operations. These engineers may also handle emergency incidents and provide on-call support as needed. The role requires strong technical skills and the ability to work independently during off-peak hours.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a weekend systems engineer?

A Weekend Systems Engineer is primarily responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting IT infrastructure during weekend hours when regular staff may be unavailable. Common challenges include responding to critical incidents with limited onsite support, ensuring system uptime, and managing scheduled maintenance windows. The role often requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently, but team collaboration may occur through remote communication tools or handoffs with weekday engineers. This position is ideal for those comfortable with autonomy and quick decision-making under pressure.

Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to work independently during off-hours are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure the reliability, security, and efficient operation of IT infrastructure during critical weekend periods when staffing is limited.

Job description

About Us
Applecart is the leading technology company that C-suites rely on to reach business-critical decision makers. The most important decisions are made by the hardest people to reach and influence. Historically, C-suite leaders have lacked the tools to reach the stakeholders who matter most to their business. The C-suites of hundreds of Fortune 500 companies, major agencies, trade associations, nonprofits, and governments use Applecart to put their best content in front of business-critical decision makers and those they trust - from policymakers and investors to CEOs, key employees, members of the media and more. Decision makers are informed by what they read, learn from advisors, hear from colleagues, and discuss with family and friends. To break through to them, you must reach them through the only channel that really moves them: those they know and trust. Applecart's platform uses publicly available data to map billions of social relationships between nearly every American adult and enable clients to deliver content directly to decision makers and those who matter most to them.
We are hiring a Systems Engineer in our New York City office.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for Level 1 and 2 Help Desk Support for Windows and Mac devices, supporting enterprise networking and Applecart office expansion. Additionally, you will assist with core systems administrations, systems automation and scripting using python. In this position, you will work with HR, Business Operations, Office Management, and Platform teams. This role will report to the Director of Information Systems and Technology.
What You'll Do:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal technical support.
  • Support daily Applecart office operations alongside operations teams.
  • Improve security and automation posture.
  • Partner with the IT Director for large initiatives such as MDM configuration and migration and SOC 2 readiness.

Experiences and Capabilities You Bring:
  • 3+ years of experience in IT Systems Administrator or similar role.
  • Hands-On + Remote Help Desk experience (Zendesk, Freshworks, ServiceNow, Jira Service Desk, etc.)
  • Strong administration experience (Okta, Google Workspace (GAM), Slack, MS Office)
  • Device management experience with Windows and macOS (Apple Business Manager, Jamf, Kandji/Iru, MaaS360, Intune, Hexnode, JumpCloud, Workspace ONE), leveraging service for an automated OOBE.
  • Enterprise networking experience (Juniper, Unify, Meraki, Cisco).
  • SSO integration experience (Okta, OneLogin).
  • Python scripting experience (PyCharm, VSCode, GitHub (no AI IDEs Cursor, Tailwind, Manus)) to automate repetitive tasks.
  • Experience supporting SOC 2 audits or similar compliance frameworks.
  • AWS/public cloud certification is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and superior organizational skills

This is a hybrid role. Work from home on Monday and Friday and in Applecart's New York City office Tuesday through Thursday.
Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the area independently.
Compensation:
Our compensation package consists of three components: (i) a base salary, (ii) annual cash bonus, and (iii) generous equity compensation.
The base salary range for this role is between $95,000 - $125,000, based on the candidate's experience and skills relative to the requirements listed above.
