Weekend Software Engineering Consultant information

What is a weekend software engineering consultant?

Weekend Software Engineering Consultants are professionals who offer their software development expertise on a part-time basis, typically working on weekends. They are often hired by companies or individuals who need extra assistance with coding, troubleshooting, or project management outside of regular business hours. These consultants may work remotely or onsite, and their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to advising on software architecture or technology choices. Hiring a weekend consultant can help businesses accelerate project timelines or address critical issues without disrupting weekday operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend software engineering consultant?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Engineering Consultant, you need strong programming expertise, a solid understanding of software architecture, and a degree in computer science or a related field, often combined with prior consulting experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and current development frameworks is essential, and certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time management skills set outstanding consultants apart, especially when working independently or with remote teams. These competencies enable consultants to quickly deliver effective solutions, maintain client satisfaction, and ensure project success within limited weekend hours.

What are some typical challenges faced by weekend software engineering consultants when balancing multiple client projects?

Weekend Software Engineering Consultants often juggle several projects simultaneously, which requires strong time management and communication skills. Since client needs may shift or escalate quickly, consultants must be adaptable and proactive in updating project stakeholders. Additionally, working primarily on weekends can mean collaborating asynchronously with teams that operate during standard business hours, so setting clear expectations and maintaining thorough documentation is essential for project continuity and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Weekend Software Engineering Consultant vs Part-Time Software Developer?

Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ mainly in scope, work schedule, and engagement type.

Job description

FI Consulting is seeking a highly motivated Consultant who combines software engineering, data analytics, cloud technologies, and AI-enabled problem solving to build impactful solutions for complex client challenges.
This individual will design, develop, and deploy modern applications, automation, analytics, and AI-enabled solutions that drive measurable business outcomes. The role operates at the intersection of consulting, software development, data, and emerging AI technologies, with opportunities to work directly with clients and stakeholders across a variety of projects and industries.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop software applications, analytical tools, APIs, automation, and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Translate complex business and client problems into structured technical solutions, workflows, and system designs.
  • Develop GenAI and agentic AI capabilities, including AI-assisted workflows, document understanding, information extraction, recommendation and decision-support capabilities.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines, APIs, backend services, and cloud-based systems using AWS or similar platforms.
  • Build software and scripts to automate manual or complex business processes.
  • Work with structured and unstructured data to support analytics, application functionality, and AI use cases.
  • Apply AI-assisted development tools to improve the speed, quality, and efficiency of software development and project delivery.
  • Participate throughout the Agile software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, coding, testing, CI/CD, deployment, and production support.
  • Collaborate with developers, architects, data teams, business analysts, and client stakeholders to successfully deliver project solutions.
  • Communicate technical approaches, recommendations, risks, and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science, Finance, or a related quantitative or technical field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in software development, data engineering, quantitative development, AI/ML development, or technical consulting.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, R, or similar, with proficiency working with SQL and databases.
  • Experience developing software applications, APIs, automation, or data-driven solutions.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and cloud-native development; AWS experience preferred.
  • Experience working with complex structured and/or unstructured datasets.
  • Familiarity with modern AI/GenAI technologies, including LLMs, AI APIs, or AI-assisted application development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Strong consulting skills, including communication, collaboration, stakeholder management, and the ability to work effectively in client-facing environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience developing Generative AI or Agentic AI applications and workflows.
  • Experience with LLM platforms and services such as Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with RAG, vector search, knowledge bases, document processing, prompt engineering, tool/function calling, or AI workflow orchestration.
  • Experience implementing AI evaluation, validation, confidence handling, guardrails, or human-in-the-loop review processes.
  • Experience building end-to-end applications or production-grade systems.
  • Exposure to full-stack development, microservices, or system architecture.
  • Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, databases, IAM, CloudWatch, or related services.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience in banking, finance, housing, real estate, capital markets, or other regulated industries.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate:
  • Takes ownership of specific deliverables and outcomes from design through implementation.
  • Is comfortable working across software development, data, AI, and business problem solving rather than within a narrowly defined technical role.
  • Learns and applies new technologies quickly.
  • Demonstrates strong curiosity about emerging AI technologies and how they can be applied to real business problems.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to automate processes, improve user experiences, and increase delivery efficiency.
  • Can evaluate when AI is appropriate and when conventional software or analytics approaches provide a better solution.
  • Works effectively in environments requiring collaboration between business stakeholders, software engineers, data teams, and technical architects.
  • Demonstrates initiative and intellectual curiosity beyond formal project requirements.
  • Has a strong interest in using AI as both a solution capability and a productivity accelerator.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. FI Consulting is not able to accept candidates requiring visa sponsorship or individuals currently working under OPT, H-1B, EAD, or other temporary work authorization for this position.
  • Must successfully complete required background investigation and drug screening.
  • Must reside in, or relocate to, the Washington, DC metropolitan area within 30 days of hire.
FLSA Designation
  • This is an exempt position.
  • FI Consulting participates in E-Verify.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity/disability/protected veteran status.
  • FI Consulting is committed to working with and providing reasonable accommodation to individuals with physical and mental disabilities.
