What does a weekend software engineer at Reddit do?

A Weekend Software Engineer at Reddit is responsible for developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Reddit's software systems during weekends. Their duties often include implementing new features, fixing bugs, monitoring site reliability, and responding to technical issues that arise outside regular business hours. This role is crucial for ensuring Reddit’s platform remains functional and user-friendly at all times, especially during high-traffic periods on weekends. Weekend Software Engineers collaborate with other team members and may also contribute to on-call rotations to provide continuous support.

How does the work schedule and collaboration process typically look for a weekend software engineer at Reddit?

Collaboration is largely remote and asynchronous, leveraging tools like Slack, GitHub, and Jira to communicate with team members and share updates. You may interact closely with on-call engineers, site reliability teams, and occasionally product managers to ensure smooth handoffs and fast resolution of urgent issues. This schedule offers flexibility but also requires strong self-motivation and proactive communication skills to stay aligned with the broader engineering team.

To thrive as a Weekend Software Engineer at Reddit, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript, or Go), experience with scalable web architectures, and a relevant computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP), and Reddit's technology stack is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, effective remote communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills, especially when working independently on weekends. These skills and qualities ensure you can efficiently contribute to codebases, address production issues, and collaborate asynchronously to support Reddit’s continuous operations.
