Is it true that AI will replace software engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace software engineers, especially those working as weekend developers, because human creativity, problem-solving, and understanding of complex systems remain essential. AI tools can assist with coding and automation, but software development still requires critical thinking, design, and oversight that humans provide. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies are important for software engineers to stay relevant in an evolving field.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced software engineers, especially those in specialized fields like machine learning, AI, or cybersecurity, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These roles often require advanced skills, certifications, and leadership responsibilities, and may include bonuses or stock options that significantly increase total compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in relevant languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), software development experience, and often at least a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, popular frameworks, and agile project management tools is typically expected. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for balancing weekend work and collaborating with remote or distributed teams. These skills ensure the developer can efficiently produce high-quality code, meet deadlines, and contribute positively to project goals even outside traditional work hours.

What are the typical expectations and communication practices for a Weekend Software Developer working with a distributed team?

Weekend Software Developers often collaborate with teams that operate across various time zones and schedules. Clear, asynchronous communication is crucial, as you may need to provide detailed status updates, document your progress, and flag any blockers for your weekday colleagues. Many teams use tools like Slack, Jira, or Trello to facilitate handovers and ensure seamless project continuity. You can expect your responsibilities to focus on feature development, bug fixes, or code reviews, with an emphasis on self-management and proactive reporting. Building strong written communication skills will help you succeed and integrate smoothly with the broader development team.

Can you make $500,000 as a software engineer?

Earning $500,000 as a software engineer is possible but typically requires senior-level experience, specialized skills, working at large tech companies, or in high-paying regions. Most software engineers earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, with higher salaries often linked to leadership roles, stock options, or consulting work.

What are Weekend Software Developers?

Weekend Software Developers are professionals who work primarily on weekends to develop, test, and maintain software applications. They may work part-time, on contract, or as freelancers, often supporting companies that require continuous development or maintenance outside of standard business hours. These roles are ideal for individuals seeking flexible work schedules or supplemental income. Weekend Software Developers typically possess the same technical skills as full-time developers, including programming, problem-solving, and collaboration abilities.

What Are Weekend Jobs for a Software Developer?

About the Role

Weโ€™re looking for a Software Engineer who thrives in fast-moving environments and wants to make a meaningful impact on a growing engineering team. Weโ€™re a small, high-velocity team that values curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and delivering exceptional customer experience.

Youโ€™ll work closely with Product and Engineering to design, build, and ship high-quality software across our platform while helping shape technical direction, engineering standards, and team culture.

We ship to production daily and operate with an AI-first development mindset. We expect engineers to actively leverage AI tooling in their workflow and push the boundaries of how AI can accelerate development, improve engineering quality, and enhance the product itself.

Our core tech stack and tools include PHP/Laravel, React, Angular, MySQL, AWS, Claude Code, and Datadog.

Youโ€™ll do well here if you enjoy solving ambiguous problems, moving quickly, taking ownership, and building practical solutions without unnecessary process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship features across backend, frontend, and infrastructure layers

  • Own projects from concept through production, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and post-release follow-through

  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to strong engineering practices and standards

  • Use AI development tools, including Claude Code, as a core part of your daily workflow

  • Participate in thoughtful code reviews and collaborate openly with teammates

  • Troubleshoot production issues, optimize performance, and improve system reliability

  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, Operations, and Customer teams to turn ideas into scalable solutions

  • Maintain a strong customer-first mindset in both technical and product decisions

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience

  • Strong experience with modern web application development, preferably including React, PHP/Laravel, and relational databases

  • Strong alignment with AI-assisted and agentic development workflows

  • Proven ability to design scalable, maintainable systems, not just deliver short-term solutions

  • Demonstrated ownership and accountability, including the ability to independently drive projects, ask the right questions early, and proactively identify risks or blockers

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and modern deployment practices, preferably within AWS environments

  • Experience with containerization, serverless architectures, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)

  • Knowledge of observability, application performance tuning, and system troubleshooting

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and performance-based incentives

  • Comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, 401(k), and generous PTO

  • Full-time remote role with flexible work arrangements

  • Opportunity to shape the technical direction of a growing platform and engineering organization

  • Collaborative team focused on execution, innovation, and continuous improvement

  • High-growth, low-ego environment with meaningful ownership and visibility

  • Professional development and leadership growth opportunities

  • Mission-driven work with a measurable impact on community safety nationwide
