What is a weekend sedation nurse?

A Weekend Sedation Nurse is a registered nurse who specializes in providing sedation and monitoring patients during procedures or treatments that require mild to moderate sedation, typically during weekend shifts. These nurses work closely with physicians, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients are safely and comfortably sedated. Their responsibilities include assessing patients before sedation, administering sedative medications, monitoring vital signs throughout procedures, and managing any complications that may arise. The role is crucial in hospitals, clinics, and outpatient centers that operate over weekends and need skilled sedation care.

What are some unique challenges a weekend sedation nurse might face compared to weekday nursing roles?

Weekend Sedation Nurses often work with limited on-site staff and resources, which can make quick decision-making and strong communication skills especially important. Additionally, they may encounter a wider range of patient cases due to urgent procedures scheduled outside regular hours. Collaboration with on-call physicians and anesthesiologists is common, and managing patient comfort while ensuring safety during sedation is a central responsibility. Adaptability and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key strengths for nurses in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend sedation nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Sedation Nurse, you need a valid nursing license (RN or higher), advanced knowledge of sedation protocols, and strong patient assessment skills. Familiarity with sedation monitoring equipment, electronic health records (EHRs), and certifications such as ACLS and PALS are typically required. Outstanding attention to detail, calmness under pressure, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing patient safety and collaborating with healthcare teams. These competencies ensure safe administration of sedation, optimal patient outcomes, and efficient care delivery during weekend shifts.

Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse (RN)

Springfield Memorial Hospital

Schedule:

  • 7:00 am – 5:30 pm (4×10s), Monday–Friday
  • Rotational weekends and evenings on-call
  • One weekday off (varies)
  • Call: One weeknight every 3rd  week; on-call typically scheduled on regular workdays

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Registered Nurse plays a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care within a fast-paced procedural environment. IR nurses at Springfield Memorial Hospital care for a wide variety of patients—from ambulatory outpatients undergoing minor procedures to critically ill inpatients requiring complex, time-sensitive interventions such as stroke. This role requires a strong clinical foundation, exceptional critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly to rapidly changing patient conditions. Unlike ICU or ED nursing, the IR environment offers intense clinical engagement one patient at a time, allowing the nurse to focus deeply while supporting a high-turnover workflow. As part of a Magnet hospital, IR nurses are expected to embrace lifelong learning, uphold high standards of clinical excellence, and consistently exceed patient experience expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing IR procedures across seven imaging modalities, including:
    • CT
    • Ultrasound
    • Diagnostic X-ray
    • Molecular Imaging
    • MRI
    • Baylis outpatient imaging
    • Interventional procedural suites
  • Perform and assist with a broad range of procedures, including moderate sedation, cardiac medication administration for imaging exams, vascular access, and pre-/post-procedural care.
  • Monitor and manage hemodynamics, vital signs, sedation levels, and procedural responses.
  • Care for ICU, IMC, and ED patients requiring IR interventions.
  • Maintain proficiency in IV placement, dressing assessment, medication administration, and procedural readiness.
  • Function as the sole nurse in the procedure room, collaborating closely with radiology technologists, physicians, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Support a fast-paced, high-turnover setting while maintaining patient safety, compassion, and calm communication.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and procedural events accurately and promptly.

Why Join Springfield Memorial Hospital?

At SMH, quality care begins with caring. As an IR RN, you will join a team that values compassion, innovation, and excellence. You will work with the latest medical imaging technologies, contribute to life-saving interventions, and grow within a Magnet-recognized nursing culture that prioritizes professional development and patient-centered care.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Active RN license in the state of Illinois (or ability to obtain)
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in ICU, ED, or PACU
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking, rapid clinical assessment, and independent decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, technologically advanced environment with a wide procedural scope
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred:

  • Experience with procedural sedation
  • Charge nurse experience (e.g., cardiac or dialysis)
  • Familiarity with caring for critically ill patients outside of traditional inpatient units

Not accepting new graduates for this position.
