Job description

School Security Monitor

The School Security Monitor is responsible for helping maintain a safe, orderly, and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role focuses on monitoring school facilities, controlling building access, supporting safety procedures, and responding appropriately to security concerns. The School Security Monitor is not a law enforcement position but works collaboratively with school administration and staff to promote a safe and supportive school environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor assigned areas of the school building and campus, including entrances, hallways, empty classrooms, common areas and school basement/storage.
  • Conduct periodic patrols of the building and grounds on foot and via security monitors to ensure safety and compliance with school procedures.
  • Use the checkpoint system to verify and document that all assigned areas are routinely monitored at established intervals.
  • Supervise building entry points and ensure that all visitors follow school sign-in procedures.
  • Operate and monitor security cameras and alarm systems and report any suspicious activity or security concerns.
  • Assist with maintaining orderly arrival, dismissal, and transitions throughout the school day.
  • Respond to safety concerns, disturbances, or emergencies in accordance with school procedures and notify administration when necessary.
  • Help prevent unauthorized access to the building and address safety concerns in a calm and professional manner.
  • Document incidents, observations, and safety concerns through written reports as required.
  • Communicate regularly with school administration regarding safety concerns and potential improvements to security procedures.
  • Support staff and administration during safety drills and emergency situations.
  • Maintain professional and respectful interactions with students, staff, families, and visitors.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous security, safety, or school-related experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children or in an educational setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic security procedures and emergency response protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and monitor school areas for extended periods of time.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting.
  • Also accountable to the Assistant Principal, who may advise the supervisor on relevant matters including the performance evaluation.
