Job description

Summary

Welders are responsible for performing welds in multiple positions using a variety of processes in accordance with NAVSEA-approved procedures, in a safe and efficient manner. Responsibilities include operating, maintaining and troubleshooting welding and cutting equipment, preparing components through precise layout and fitting, and conducting quality inspections. 1st Class Mechanics are expected to independently receive assignments, plan the work, identify material requirements, and execute tasks efficiently and accurately.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and always adhere to all OSHA safety standards and Tcnico safety policies.
  • Must adhere to all applicable safety, technical, and regulatory guidelines, including but not limited to:
    • Company policies and procedures
    • Local, state, and federal regulations
    • ABS, NAVSEA Standard Items, and MSC GTRs
    • MIL-STD (e.g., 22D, 248, 278, 271, 1689, 2035)
    • General Specifications for Overhaul of Ships
  • Perform advanced welding in multiple positions (2G, 3G, 4G, 6G) using various processes (GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, GMAW-P, SMAW) in compliance with NAVSEA-approved procedures and specifications.
  • Conduct quality control checks using precision gauges and ensure all work meets NAVSEA standards; inspect finished welds for defects and conformance.
  • Operate and maintain welding tools and equipment, including manual/semi-automatic systems, hand and power tools, and cutting equipment (e.g., wire feeders, carbon arc rigs, tig rigs, mig/flux core guns CAC-A).
  • Prepare and align components for welding through layout, measuring, beveling, and fitting while monitoring for distortion or heat-related issues.
  • Possess and maintain personal tools/equipment necessary to accomplish their trade.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and material issues, change out wire spools, tips/nozzles or adjust, and notify management when replacements are needed.
  • Must be proficient at reading and interpreting weld symbols on blueprints and drawings.
  • Conduct self-inspections to ensure work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings and specifications.
  • Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen, providing direction as a senior mechanic when required.
  • Maintain a good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT, etc.).


Certification Requirements

  • Must be qualified in 3-position SMAW carbon steel plate and 3-position FCAW carbon steel plate.
  • Hold a carbon arcing qualification, plus one additional SMAW certification (not carbon steel) and one additional FCAW plate certification (not carbon steel).
  • Hold a SMAW 110-18 6GT Pipe certification, and either a GMAW-P Aluminum certification or 3 SMAW and 3 FCAW pipe/plate certifications.


Experience Requirements

  • 4 - 6 years of experience as a Welder in a shipyard.


Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to airborne particles or fumes.
  • Must be able to wear a respirator as required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit testing and respiratory protection protocols.
  • Regularly required to sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids).
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. independently and seek assistance for heavier loads.
  • Must be able to pass Drug Screening, Work Ability Screening.
  • Must be able to obtain a Government facility security pass and badges at the various shipyards Tcnico works at (e.g., MHI, BAE, NASSCO, HII).
  • Availability to work overtime, weekends, or travel to alternate worksites when project needs demand.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
