What does a weekend reporter do?

A Weekend Reporter is a journalist who works primarily on weekends to cover breaking news, events, and stories that occur during that time. Their responsibilities often include attending events, conducting interviews, researching stories, and delivering news updates for print, broadcast, or online platforms. Weekend Reporters need to be flexible and ready to respond quickly to developing stories since news can happen at any time. They play a crucial role in ensuring continuous news coverage outside the typical weekday schedule.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a weekend reporter?

To thrive as a Weekend Reporter, you need strong news judgment, writing skills, and a background in journalism or communications. Familiarity with digital content management systems, editing software, and social media tools is typically required. Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY
Fox TV Stations
FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network's national content.
JOB DESCRIPTION
FOX 10 is searching for a versatile, personable, high-energy Streaming Host/Producer to drive coverage across all FOX 10 live stream platforms.
In this dynamic, nights-and-weekends role, you will host unscripted live coverage of breaking news events in real time, engage with digital audiences through chat and produce VOD content to inform our audience about topics that matter most. We are looking for a journalist who thrives in the fast pace of breaking news, doesn't need to rely on a teleprompter, and knows exactly how to connect with digital viewers on a personal, human level through a conversational approach. If you love unscripted reporting and are ready to redefine how local news is shared, we want you on our team!
What You'll Do
  • Own the Stream: Serve as the face and voice of our night and weekend stream. You will balance real-time coverage of events as they unfold with updates and insights on the day's biggest topics.
  • Keep It Conversational: Ditch the script! Talk with our audience, not at them. You will drive digital engagement during both daily news blocks and breaking, unscripted events.
  • Master the Tech: We will train you to operate a Tricaster, empowering you to independently produce, direct, and anchor your very own streaming broadcasts.
  • Be a Team Player: Seamlessly transition between hosting your own live coverage and jumping in to support your talented teammates behind the camera in a producing role, when needs arise.

What You'll Need
  • News Junkie Mentality: A strong knowledge of current events, topics making headlines and stories that matter to our audience.
  • Confidence: Proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently, on camera and off, in a fast-paced breaking news environment.
  • Sharp Instincts: Excellent editorial judgment, strong research skills, and a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Digital Fluency: Basic experience with digital news production, live streaming workflows, and newsroom technologies. Familiarity with a Tricaster is a huge plus, but a willingness and ability to learn new technology quickly is a must.
  • Strategic Mindset: Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and always think several steps ahead.
  • Agility: The ability to thrive under pressure and pivot quickly as news develops in real time.
  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and a team-first attitude.
  • Flexibility: Weekends, holidays, and varied hours required.
  • Growth Mindset: You see challenges as opportunities, not obstacles. You want to work with a team of like-minded journalists who want to set the bar in the ever-evolving streaming space.

Qualifications & Skills
Experience & Education
  • Professional Background: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a streaming producer, Multimedia Journalist (MMJ), or Reporter.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, or a related field is preferred.

Technical & Professional Skills
  • On-Camera Presence: Excellent unscripted delivery and communication skills are required.
  • Writing Mastery: Flawless writing and copy-editing skills, with high proficiency in English grammar and a conversational broadcast style.
  • Tech-Savvy: Proficiency with video production technology, including non-linear editing (such as Adobe Premiere Pro) and video switching tools.
  • Judgment: Exceptional news and editorial judgment backed by a deep commitment to ethical integrity.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, gender identity, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We will consider for employment qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable law.
Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $80,000.00-90,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
