The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) is the worldwide leader in mountainย bike advocacy. IMBA is dedicated to growing the quality and quantity of mountain biking trailย communities and destinations. We partner with a network of grassroots mountain bikingย advocacy organizations and community Trail Champions by providing professional technicalย assistance and local capacity-building programs. We are focused on creating quality trails closeย to home so that everyone has access to great places to ride mountain bikes.


Position Summary:

The Director of Finance is a full-time, exempt position responsible for leading all day-to-dayย accounting and financial reporting functions, ensuring the organization maintains impeccableย financial records, strong internal controls, and compliance with all nonprofit, federal, and stateย regulations. This role is critical in managing the organization's financial health, with a specificย focus on restricted fund accounting, project-based accounting, accurate monthly close, budgetย development and management, preparation for the annual audit, Form 990 filing, and theย efficient operation of financial systems. The Director of Finance will also mentor and manage aย small team.


The ideal candidate is a hands-on finance leader who can execute day-to-day accounting whileย also thinking strategically about systems, reserves, risk management, and operationalย improvement. This role will help ensure IMBA's long-term financial health, growth, and strategicย planning as a member of the executive leadership team, advising the CEO and Board.

Responsibilities:

Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO on financial strategy and provide sound financial analysis and recommendations.
  • Lead the annual organizational budgeting process in alignment with strategic and operational goals.
  • Develop, track, and refine financial reporting, dashboards, and automations.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems and tools to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Supervise a small staff.
  • Demonstrate empathy for the diverse challenges across departments and functions within the organization.

Financial Operations & Close

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance withย Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the full-cycle, timely, and accurate month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation (e.g., Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, and Statement of Cash Flows).
  • Maintain a comprehensive system of accounting records and an organized filing system for all accounting documents.
  • Analyze financial data and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports accurately and in a timely manner to senior leadership and the Board.
  • Generate and distribute detailed department-level financial reports to budget managers, providing actionable insights into spending, performance, and budget adherence.ย 
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, managing the annual financial statement and Single Audit processes, including assembling documentation, preparing schedules, and coordinating with staff.ย 
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal tax filings and reporting requirements, including preparation of the annual Form 990.

Fund Accounting and Budgeting

  • Oversee all financial, program, and grants accounting to ensure expenditures align withย grant and program budgets.
  • Manage restricted fund accounting to ensure all incoming grants and donor funds are properly recorded, classified, and used according to donor intent and FASB/IRS guidelines.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and planning process, administer the approved financial plan, and conduct variance analysis comparing actual results to budget.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Technology and Systems
  • Oversee financial systems and software integration projects, ensuring efficient data flow and integrity across platforms.
  • Maintain a robust system of internal controls and fiscal policies to mitigate risk andensure compliance.
  • Demonstrate expertise in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  • Process or oversee payroll and related tax filings; experience with ADP preferred.
  • Manage expense reporting and reimbursement processes; experience with Expensify preferred.

Qualifications/Desired Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including significant time in a Controller or Assistant Controller role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Expert knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and compliance requirements (e.g., GAAP, IRS regulations).
  • Proven experience supervising and mentoring accounting staff.
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting software, particularly QuickBooks Online (QBO).
  • Experience with ADP payroll and Expensify (or similar expense management systems).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret strategic data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with complex charts of accounts.
  • Proficiency in Excel and standard office software.
  • Experience with accounting functions within CRM donor databases and project management software.
  • Experience managing credit card processing and merchant services systems.

Compensation and Benefits:
