What is a Weekend RBT?

A Weekend RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a certified paraprofessional who works under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, typically on weekends. Their primary role is to implement behavior intervention plans and teach skills to individuals with autism or other developmental disorders. Weekend RBTs may work in clients' homes, clinics, or community settings, providing flexible support outside of traditional weekday hours.

What are some unique challenges and opportunities for growth in a Weekend RBT role?

As a Weekend RBT, you'll often work with clients and families who have limited weekday availability, which means effective communication and flexibility are key. While weekend shifts may involve fewer team members onsite, you'll still collaborate closely with supervising BCBA professionals and maintain regular documentation. This schedule can offer unique opportunities for hands-on experience, autonomy, and building strong client relationships, which are valuable for career advancement. Additionally, successful RBTs often find that weekend experience positions them well for future leadership or full-time roles within ABA organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend RBT, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend RBT, you need a solid understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, a high school diploma or equivalent, and the RBT certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Familiarity with data collection tools, ABA software, and experience following treatment plans is essential. Strong communication, patience, and adaptability make someone stand out when working directly with clients and their families. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering consistent, effective behavioral interventions and supporting client progress during weekend sessions.

Many RBTs work weekends if required by their clients or program, and some positions may offer weekday shifts with weekends off. It varies based on the job setting and staffing needs.

If you are passionate about helping others and want to have a career changing lives, then the Registered Behavior Technician position could be the perfect fit for you.

About Us

LittleStar ABA Therapy works with children, teens, and young adults affected by autism.  Operating as a non-profit organization, we use our resources to ensure quality services to our patients, and to invest in our staff and the autism community. Our clinical leadership consists of experts in the field of ABA, including three PhDs.  We have been improving the lives of individuals with autism for over 20 years!

Summary

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) position is one of the most important roles within our organization!  As an RBT, you will implement your patient’s individualized program written by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), you will help your patient learn new skills that are truly beneficial to them and their family.  Some of the targets we work on are social, communication, vocational, and life skills. We support patients from two years old to young adults. Services are implemented in the most appropriate setting for the patient and can include the therapy center, home, school, workplace, and/or other community-based setting. The RBT position offers a lot of variety as each day can look a little different!

Why You Should Work an RBT

  • Work one-on-one with individuals on the autism spectrum and help them learn skills to improve the quality of their life.

  • Unlike many professions, RBTs have one job and one focus- working with the patients.

  • The RBT position provides great experience for anyone interested psychology, social work, speech and occupational therapy, education, and all human services.

  • Grow professionally and personally. RBT's learn skills that are applicable in various occupations and many aspects of life.

  • Be an advocate for your patient!

  • Build relationships and have fun while you work!

  • The RBT position is a great career for anyone motivated and rewarded by seeing patients make real progress. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the most effective treatment for individuals with autism and is endorsed by the US Surgeon General. It is science based and proven to work.

"Behavior analysis... it's more than a job, it's a calling." - Dr. Pat Friman
