Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

A Machinist at Wanner Engineering is responsible for independently setting up, operating, and optimizing CNC machining equipment to meet quality, production, and safety expectations. This role requires advanced machining knowledge including program edits, offsets, tooling selection, and troubleshooting of machining and process-related issues. The Weekend Shift Machinist supports throughput and quality goals by maintaining stable processes, resolving problems quickly, and ensuring continuity between shifts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

CNC Setup & Machining Operations

· Perform complete machine setups including workholding, tooling, offsets, probing routines (as applicable), and first-piece validation.

· Run CNC equipment according to schedules and priorities while maintaining quality and efficiency targets.

· Make program edits at the machine or offline (as allowed by procedure) to correct issues, improve cycle time, or maintain dimensional requirements.

· Set and adjust tool offsets/wear offsets; manage tool life and tool change strategies to prevent scrap and downtime.

· Verify correct revision level of prints/programs/setup documentation prior to running production.

· Communicate status, issues, and handoff details to Leads/Supervisors and the next shift to maintain continuity.

Quality & Documentation

· Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and specifications to ensure parts meet print requirements.

· Perform first article and in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gage, indicators, etc.).

· Identify trends/drift and take corrective action (offset changes, tooling changes, parameter adjustments) to maintain capability.

· Complete required documentation including production logs, counts, scrap reports, WIP/move tags, setup/inspection records, and any quality forms required.

· Escalate nonconforming conditions promptly and support containment actions as directed.

Troubleshooting & Process Support

· Troubleshoot machining and process issues including dimensional variation, surface finish concerns, chatter, tool breakage, workholding problems, and machine alarms.

· Diagnose root causes (tooling, program, setup, fixturing, material, coolant, machine condition) and implement corrective actions within scope.

· Support continuous improvement by recommending or implementing cycle-time reductions, setup improvements, mistake-proofing, and standard work updates.

· Collaborate with Engineering/Quality/Leads to refine processes, improve repeatability, and reduce scrap.

Equipment Care & Maintenance

· Perform routine preventive maintenance checks (cleaning, lubrication, chip management, coolant checks, basic mechanical checks) per daily machine maintenance expectations.

· Perform tool changes, basic machine adjustments, and minor repairs within training/authorization; coordinate with Supervisor for higher-level repairs.

· Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area (5S expectations).

Team Support & Leadership on Shift

· Provide guidance to operators or less-experienced machinists on the weekend shift (as needed) regarding setup, measurement, and safe operation.

· Support cross-training efforts and help stabilize staffing by flexing across machines/cells when capable and assigned.

· Promote safe work practices and support adherence to company policies and ISO/QMS requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

· 5+ years machining experience in a CNC manufacturing environment (preferred overall range: 5–15 years).

· Demonstrated ability to independently set up and run CNC equipment (mills and/or lathes) with minimal supervision.

· Ability to edit adjust feeds/speeds and manage offsets to maintain print requirements.

· Strong blueprint reading skills; working knowledge of GD&T.

· Proficiency with precision measurement tools and in-process inspection methods.

· Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and commitment to safety.

Preferred

· Experience operating and setting up Nakamura-Tome turning centers is strongly preferred

· Experience with twin-spindle, twin-turret turning equipment, including machine setup, tooling selection, speeds and feeds adjustments, and in-process optimization.

· Ability to interpret tool offsets, work offsets, machine alarms, and diagnostic information to troubleshoot machining or equipment-related issues.

· Experience machining a variety of materials, including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, while maintaining tight tolerances.

· Experience supporting continuous improvement / lean manufacturing initiatives.

· Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain).

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Use of standard office/manufacturing equipment and PPE as required.

· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

· Ability to stand/walk throughout shift, and perform repetitive tasks.
