What are weekend programmers?

Weekend programmers are individuals who primarily write, develop, or maintain software during weekends rather than as a full-time weekday job. They might do this to pursue personal projects, contribute to open-source software, or supplement their income with freelance work. Weekend programmers can be professionals seeking extra experience, students learning new skills, or hobbyists enjoying coding in their spare time. This flexible schedule allows them to balance programming with other commitments or interests.

What are some typical challenges faced by Weekend Programmers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Programmers often face challenges such as balancing tight deadlines with limited work hours, staying aligned with weekday teams, and managing communication gaps. To overcome these, it's important to maintain clear documentation, proactively communicate updates, and leverage collaboration tools to stay in sync with full-time colleagues. Setting clear priorities and expectations with your manager can also help ensure your contributions have maximum impact within the available time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java, and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), code editors, and possibly cloud platforms or collaborative tools is common. Effective time management, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for balancing part-time coding with other commitments. These skills enable consistent productivity, quality code delivery, and successful collaboration on weekend or short-term software projects.

What Are Weekend Jobs for a Programmer?

As a weekend programmer, you work part-time on Saturday-Sunday to complete computer programming responsibilities. Your duties may require you to develop software programs, code program designs into a language a computer understands, test systems to ensure they are working correctly, and install computer updates. You may communicate with software developers as well as the client to ensure efficient translation and development of the program. Some programs may be developed in a couple of days, while other jobs may require multiple weekends to complete. The programs you create may be used for phone applications, operating systems, or websites. A weekend programmer may work for a company or provide freelance services.

Job description

CNC Programmer CNC Programmer (Lathe, Mill, 5-Axis)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to develop, optimize, and document CNC machining programs for lathe, mill, and 5-axis equipment. The ideal candidate will translate engineering drawings into efficient, safe, and accurate CNC programs, support setup and troubleshooting on the shop floor, and collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve processes, reduce cycle times, and maintain high quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create and edit CNC programs for lathes, milling centers, and 5-axis machines using CAM software and conversational controls as required.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications to generate tooling plans, sequence operations, and select feeds, speeds and cutting strategies.
  • Optimize programs for cycle time reduction, tool life extension, and part quality while ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Generate setup sheets, tooling lists, and work instructions to support machine operators and setup personnel.
  • Support machine setup and first-article runs, including proving-out programs, troubleshooting unexpected issues, and making real-time program adjustments.
  • Collaborate with design, quality, and production teams to suggest design for manufacturability (DFM) improvements and implement process changes.
  • Maintain CNC program library, revision control, and documentation for traceability and continuous improvement.
  • Perform root cause analysis on manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Train and mentor operators and junior programmers on programming best practices and machine capabilities.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree or technical diploma in machining technology, manufacturing engineering, or equivalent vocational training; or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 3+ years of CNC programming experience with lathes, mills, and multi-axis (5-axis) machining centers.
  • Proficiency with CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, GibbsCAM) and familiarity with common CNC controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Haas).
  • Strong understanding of tooling, fixturing, feeds and speeds, cutting tool selection, and machining strategies for ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and apply GD&T.
  • Experience with ISO quality systems, inspection tools (CMM, calipers, micrometers), and first-article inspection processes.
  • Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and provide shop-floor support.

Benefits

  • Full benefits package!
  • IMMEDIATE Medical, Dental, Vision coverage
  • Weekly Paychecks
  • 401k, PTO, Holiday pay, etc.
