What are weekend programmers?

Weekend programmers are individuals who primarily write, develop, or maintain software during weekends rather than as a full-time weekday job. They might do this to pursue personal projects, contribute to open-source software, or supplement their income with freelance work. Weekend programmers can be professionals seeking extra experience, students learning new skills, or hobbyists enjoying coding in their spare time. This flexible schedule allows them to balance programming with other commitments or interests.

What are some typical challenges faced by Weekend Programmers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend Programmers often face challenges such as balancing tight deadlines with limited work hours, staying aligned with weekday teams, and managing communication gaps. To overcome these, it's important to maintain clear documentation, proactively communicate updates, and leverage collaboration tools to stay in sync with full-time colleagues. Setting clear priorities and expectations with your manager can also help ensure your contributions have maximum impact within the available time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java, and a solid understanding of software development principles. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), code editors, and possibly cloud platforms or collaborative tools is common. Effective time management, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for balancing part-time coding with other commitments. These skills enable consistent productivity, quality code delivery, and successful collaboration on weekend or short-term software projects.

What Are Weekend Jobs for a Programmer?

As a weekend programmer, you work part-time on Saturday-Sunday to complete computer programming responsibilities. Your duties may require you to develop software programs, code program designs into a language a computer understands, test systems to ensure they are working correctly, and install computer updates. You may communicate with software developers as well as the client to ensure efficient translation and development of the program. Some programs may be developed in a couple of days, while other jobs may require multiple weekends to complete. The programs you create may be used for phone applications, operating systems, or websites. A weekend programmer may work for a company or provide freelance services.

Job description

About Us
Founded in 2015 to develop the world's first industrially scalable laser metal additive manufacturing solution, VulcanForms is reshaping how the world manufactures critical products. We build and operate advanced digital infrastructure that enables innovation, accelerates growth, and supports sustainability across aerospace, defense, medical, and other essential industries. Through our vertically integrated capabilities, including scalable additive manufacturing and precision machining, we deliver true end-to-end production at scale by combining cutting-edge technology with a foundation of proven industrial craftsmanship. Our team brings deep expertise in manufacturing, materials science, software, automation, and operations, united by a shared commitment to quality, curiosity, and accountability. We foster an inclusive culture where people take ownership, solve meaningful problems, and continuously learn, because we believe diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes.
Job Purpose
The Engineering Technician supports VulcanForms' Applications and Process Engineering team by operating, maintaining, and optimizing our printers to enable applications development and production readiness. This role is hands-on and execution-focused, working closely with engineers to translate part designs into successful print builds while ensuring equipment readiness, print quality, and thorough documentation.
The hours for this role are: Friday - Sunday and e/o Thursday 6am - 6pm.
Key Responsibilities
  • Set up, operate, and perform daily maintenance on OEM Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) printers to support applications development and production needs.
  • Prepare and execute print jobs using OEM printer software, including build setup, file preparation, and parameter selection.
  • Support applications development by executing print builds accurately and on schedule to meet internal and customer commitments.
  • Assist with printer installation, qualification, and validation activities, including IQ, SAT, OQ, and PQ print execution and documentation.
  • Support OEM printer operations for applications and production development and therefore to enable the application demonstration and qualification runs for production scaling up.
  • Monitor print quality and identify issues related to machine performance, materials, or process parameters, escalating as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records, build documentation, and process data to support traceability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with applications, process, and manufacturing engineers to refine workflows, materials, and print parameters for quality and efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field - or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 2+years of experience in additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, or a hands-on production environment.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing or additive manufacturing concepts; LPBF experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable working with technical software tools and following detailed work instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and ability to execute repeatable processes.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in a manufacturing environment and learn complex equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with metal additive manufacturing systems (EOS, SLM, Renishaw, or similar).
  • Exposure to printer qualification, validation, or regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Basic understanding of print parameters, materials behavior, or post-processing workflows.
  • Experience supporting applications development, prototyping, or early production builds.
  • Interest in developing a long-term career in additive manufacturing and advanced production technologies.

VulcanForms offers a competitive salary and equity package. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VulcanForms provides comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous paid time off; and a 401(k) plan with company match. The hourly pay range for this position is $32-$38 with differential pay of 5% for weekend days.
