What is a Weekend PRN RN?

A Weekend PRN RN (As Needed Registered Nurse) is a nursing position where the nurse works primarily on weekends and on an as-needed basis. These roles are typically found in hospitals, nursing homes, and healthcare facilities that require additional weekend staffing. PRN nurses do not usually have a set schedule and may be called to fill in for staff shortages. This role offers flexibility but may not guarantee a certain number of hours. Weekend PRN RNs must still meet licensing and certification requirements like full-time nurses.

What are the typical shift expectations and workload for a Weekend PRN RN?

Weekend PRN RN positions usually require nurses to work flexible hours on Saturdays and Sundays, with potential opportunities for additional shifts based on staffing needs. The workload can vary each weekend, depending on patient census and acuity, so adaptability is important. These roles often involve collaborating with a leaner weekend team, requiring strong teamwork and autonomy. While you may not have a set schedule every week, PRN positions can offer valuable hands-on experience and are ideal for nurses seeking flexibility or supplemental income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weekend PRN RN position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend PRN RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical assessment abilities, and experience in acute or long-term care settings. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, medication administration protocols, and facility-specific safety procedures is important. Flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills for managing varied shifts and patient needs. These competencies ensure that you can provide high-quality care and respond effectively to weekend staffing and patient demands.

Do PRN registered nurses have to work weekends?

PRN registered nurses are scheduled on an as-needed basis and are not typically required to work weekends unless assigned to weekend shifts. Their work schedule depends on the facility's staffing needs and the nurse's availability, often offering flexibility. However, some PRN positions may include weekend shifts if the facility requires coverage during those times.

Job description

Weekend PRN Home Health RN – Hillcrest Home Health

Location: Lincoln Metro Area
Service Line: Hillcrest Home Health
Schedule: PRN/Casual | Weekends | Daytime Visits | Flexible Scheduling

Looking for a nursing opportunity that gives you flexibility without giving up meaningful patient care?

Hillcrest Health & Living is looking for an experienced and compassionate Weekend PRN Home Health Registered Nurse to join our Hillcrest Home Health team in Lincoln.

This is a great opportunity for an RN looking to supplement their current schedule, pick up weekend hours, or enjoy the flexibility of PRN nursing while providing personalized, one-on-one care. You’ll primarily support daytime home health visits on weekends, with the option to pick up additional weekday or after-hours visits based on your interest and availability.

No two visits are exactly the same. You’ll have the autonomy to use your nursing judgment, build meaningful relationships with patients and families, and help people remain safe and independent in the place they call home.

At Hillcrest, our mission is simple: Inspiring people to live their best lives. As a Home Health RN, you’ll play an important role in making that possible.

What You’ll Do

As a Weekend PRN Home Health RN, you will provide skilled nursing care to patients throughout the Lincoln metro area while working as part of a supportive interdisciplinary team.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an RN who is confident in their clinical skills, enjoys autonomy, and appreciates the opportunity to spend focused time with patients.

This role could be a great fit if you are looking for weekend flexibility, additional nursing hours, or a PRN opportunity that allows you to make a meaningful impact without committing to a traditional full-time schedule.

Education & Credentials
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required.
  • Active Registered Nurse license in Nebraska or another Nurse Licensure Compact state required.
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience required.
  • One year of nursing experience in a home care or home health setting preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Current automobile insurance coverage required.
  • Reliable transportation required.
Why Hillcrest?

Flexibility. Autonomy. One-on-one patient care.

Home health nursing gives you the opportunity to step away from the traditional clinical setting and focus on the individual in front of you. You’ll help patients safely manage their health needs at home while educating families, building relationships, and seeing firsthand the difference your care can make.

And because this is a Weekend PRN role, you can add meaningful nursing hours to your schedule without taking on another traditional full-time commitment.

Primarily looking for weekend availability? Perfect.
Interested in occasionally picking up additional weekday or after-hours visits? Those opportunities may be available too.

What Hillcrest Offers
  • Flexible PRN scheduling.
  • Primarily daytime weekend visits.
  • Opportunity to pick up additional weekday or after-hours visits.
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Autonomy in managing patient visits and daily responsibilities.
  • Support from an experienced, collaborative interdisciplinary team.
  • Meaningful one-on-one time with patients and families.
  • 401(k) with company match for eligible team members.
  • Multiple compensation-growth opportunities.
  • Professional development and career-growth support.
  • Opportunities to grow within Hillcrest Health & Living.
Ready for a Nursing Role That Works With Your Schedule?

If you’re an experienced RN looking for flexible weekend hours, greater autonomy, and meaningful one-on-one patient care, we’d love to talk with you.

Join Hillcrest Home Health in Lincoln as a Weekend PRN Home Health RN and use your nursing skills to help patients remain safe, supported, and independent in their own homes.

Come be part of Hillcrest Health & Living and help us continue Inspiring people to live their best lives.
