Description

 Company Background:

Alta Forest Products, in partnership with Itochu Building Products, is the world's largest producer of wood fence boards, specializing in Western Red Cedar and other premium species found in the Pacific and Inland Northwest forests. In addition to producing fence boards and pallet stock lumber, Alta's zero-wood-waste sawmills produce by-products such as wood chips, sawdust, mulch, and biofuel.


Headquartered in centrally located Chehalis, Washington, Alta operates fence board sawmills in multiple Northwest rural communities.


The Role:

The Maintenance Planner supports the maintenance department in planning and scheduling maintenance activities in the mill. This includes planning and organizing labor, supplies, and materials to ensure all maintenance work is completed efficiently.


Responsibilities:

  • Assists Maintenance Manager in training crew in policies, procedures, and safety.
  • Supports the Maintenance Manager in ensuring the mill meets priority maintenance and production goals.
  • Helps supervise the maintenance crew, checking in with each member regularly to ensure they are aware of maintenance goals and performing their duties safely and efficiently.
  • Coordinates labor, materials, and supplies for the completion of maintenance tasks.
  • Effectively communicates with supervisors, employees, and management locally and throughout Alta.
  • Helps identify and plan modifications that will improve the efficiency and safety of the mill.
  • Identifies maintenance issues and prioritizes maintenance work to ensure the mill runs optimally.
  • Prepares reports, metrics, and other data for management review.
  • Facilitates purchasing, communicates professionally with vendors, and strives to purchase materials at competitive pricing.
  • Assists the Manager in managing employees' time, vacation, sick leave, etc., ensuring that each position is filled and the mill can safely operate.
  • Attends designated meetings like maintenance meetings, supervisor meetings, safety committee meetings, etc.
  • Supports the Maintenance Manager in evaluating employee skill and conduct.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Analyze data/trends to determine opportunities for improvement and/or to communicate performance to employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

 Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proven experience in Safety, Maintenance, Leadership, and Production
  • Knowledge of plant equipment, operations, predictive/preventative maintenance systems, and effective project management practices
  • Project management and organization skills are a must.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with all employees across all levels of the organization.
  • Self-disciplined with attention to detail
  • Strong computer literacy and experience with Excel and CMMS systems (Dynastar would be a plus)
  • Must have strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of all pre-employment screenings, including a background check and drug test

Work Environment

This role will operate in a professional office, log yards, and sawmill. While performing the duties of this job, employees will regularly be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts. This position will often be exposed to noise, hazards, airborne particulates, and temperature changes in indoor and outdoor weather conditions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile.
  • This position requires the occasional use of basic hand tools.
  • The employee will need to lift or carry 25 pounds or more frequently and may, at times, be required to lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping for extended lengths of time.
  • Employees must frequently use their hands and fingers to handle, feel, climb, or balance.

Position Type/Travel/Schedule

This position is an exempt position per FLSA guidelines and not eligible for overtime. A typical schedule requires the ability to work 40 hours a week. Flexibility to work evenings or weekends to accommodate critical goals and objectives may be necessary.
