Position Summary:

Responsible for the upkeep, inspections, maintenance, and repairs of all equipment on assigned vessels, to ensure operational readiness is maintained as per Savage Marine Safety Management System (SMMS) and applicable regulations.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Reports to Engineering Manager and Senior Director of Marine Operations
  • Completes assignments as designated by Engineering Manager and Senior Director of Marine Operations
  • Crew Management oversight: participate in new hire/promotion interviews, review performance evaluation, approve final SPIP for underperforming crew members.
  • Survey assigned vessels, develop, and submit bid packages for dry-dockings, and major & minor repairs
  • Coordinate and oversee vendors/contractors to verify repairs are properly completed in a timely and fiscally responsible manner
  • Identify issues with engineering shipboard systems, equipment and machinery; take immediate and preventive action to correct findings
  • Define schedules and priorities regarding equipment maintenance and engineering projects
  • Report status of machinery and equipment to ship management office personnel and engineering department
  • Maintain accurate records of repair activities and costs
  • Read and decipher technical manuals and drawings
  • Assists in planning, administering and coordinating both the continual and preventative maintenance programs as per the SMMS
  • Lead and motivate vessel staff to ensure they are provided the support they need to safely operate
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned vessels
  • Interface with regulatory bodies for all attendances
  • Work within SMMS to maintain compliance and pass annual audits
  • Assist with developing operating budgets
  • Review all purchasing activates and approve invoices
  • Maintain and Audit maintenance and purchasing systems
  • Provide support to HSEQ department for all safety related incidents, events, and as deemed necessary

Requirements to be successful in this position:

  • Familiarity and experience with marine operations, engines, machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and work on various shipboard equipment and systems
  • Performs well in a team environment with other engineers, crewmembers, vendors and ship management personnel to troubleshoot, develop solutions, and execute action plans
  • Works well on their own with minimal supervision and is self-motivated
  • High level of organization skills and close attention to detail
  • Proficient with ship reliability, operations and ship’s machinery and equipment
  • Proficiency with computer software systems and able to learn and work within new software systems.  ABS Nautical Systems (NSE) experience preferred
  • Concisely write inspection reports based on findings and observations
  • Knowledge of liquefied gas handling principles
  • Familiar with ABS rules and regulations regarding repairs to structural and machinery components onboard vessel

Education / Experience:

  • 7+ years of marine engineering experience is required
  • Prior port engineering or closely related experience is strongly preferred   
  • Marine Engineering Degree or equivalent experience.  Maritime Academy graduate preferred.
  • Maintains a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMC) of QMED or higher.  MMC of 2nd Assistant Engineer, or higher, is preferred.

  • Can perform work both in the office and outside
  • Can perform work in small areas and tight spaces with limited access
  • Available 24 hours days, days & nights, weekends and holidays as needed for emergencies.
  • Climb ladders for access to cargo, ballast and void tanks (certificate of entry will be provided).
  • Must be able to gain access to shipyards, ports and marine facilities (TWIC).
  • Work for extended hours in shipyards and terminals
  • Travel to meet vessels as required
