Job description

Job Title: High School English Teacher
Department: English Language Arts
Reports To: School Principal
Job Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and qualified English teacher to join St. Michael High School starting with the 2025-26 school year. The High School English Teacher develops students' skills in reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication. This role involves teaching literature, composition, and language arts while fostering an appreciation for diverse literary works and guiding students to express themselves effectively and creatively.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Development
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons in literature, composition, grammar, and language arts aligned with state standards.
  • Teach a variety of literary genres, including novels, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, emphasizing analysis and interpretation.
  • Develop students' writing skills through assignments such as essays, research papers, creative writing, and presentations.
  • Incorporate technology and multimedia resources to enhance learning.
Student Development
  • Foster critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication skills in students.
  • Encourage a love of reading and writing by exposing students to diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Provide individualized support to meet the needs of students with varying abilities and learning styles.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through assignments, projects, and tests, providing timely and constructive feedback.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Maintain a structured, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Manage classroom behavior and implement strategies to support positive student engagement.
  • Organize and oversee student participation in activities such as book clubs, writing workshops, or debate teams.
Collaboration and Professional Development
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to align curriculum and share teaching strategies.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress and challenges.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay updated on best practices in English education.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in English, English Education, or a related field
  • State teaching certification in English Language Arts for secondary education.
Skills and Experience
  • Strong knowledge of English literature, composition, and language arts pedagogy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in integrating technology into the classroom.
  • Classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Prior teaching experience at the high school level is preferred.
Work Environment:
  • Classroom setting with occasional responsibilities for extracurricular activities, such as student publications or drama productions.
  • May involve evening or weekend commitments for events like parent-teacher conferences or school plays.
