Job description

Campos EPC is growing and we’re looking for a Pipeline Engineer III to join our team in Chicago, Naperville (IL), Columbus (OH), or Milwaukee (WI) for a hybrid position. This role will manage and provide engineering leadership for the design of gas transmission and high‑pressure distribution projects—including scoping, location selection, and design of pipeline replacements and operator system upgrades. Responsibilities include managing a team of engineers on a project and functional basis to facilitate program production and overall development. The position will serve as the project engineer and lead, interacting with clients and communicating status, issues, and scope deviations to assist project managers.

Qualified individuals will have a strong technical foundation in pipeline and ILI‑make piggable engineering design, materials selection, management skills, and proven client‑management capabilities. The candidate is expected to build client trust. Work will be primarily in an office but will include short‑term travel (<25%).

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design Launcher and Receiver stations which include launcher/receiver barrels and associated piping.
  • Design pipeline replacements for make piggable projects.
  • Design hydrostatic tests for natural gas pipelines and stations to establish the MAOP of the infrastructure.
  • Assist in routing analysis and FEED study scopes of work.
  • Responsible for pipe sizing calculations, valve sizing, hydrostatic test design; hydraulic design, interactions with regulatory and permitting agencies as well as other pipeline engineering support.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID), piping drawings, isometric fabrication drawings, bill of materials, and general arrangement drawings.
  • Work closely with other disciplines (civil, structural, EI&C) to prepare and submit engineering design packages.
  • Innate understanding of pipeline constructability in both rural, mountainous and urban environments. Able to communicate the execution needs for all forms of trenchless installation.
  • Willingness to go into the field, before and during construction with confidence to meet in‑person with key stakeholders often without direct oversight.
  • Coordinate and develop relationships with key contacts.
  • Generate weld procedures for launcher and receiver installation projects from existing lists.
  • Design clearances for installation of launcher/receiver fabrications, including temporary setups.
  • Work with fabrication (internal and external) to generate pre‑fabricated assemblies.
  • Plan and coordinate all aspects of project with client.
  • Understanding of the “Mega Rule” requirements and experience with compliance methods.
  • Support efforts for permitting, license acquisition, and land rights associated with the project.
  • Assist in preparing Request for Proposal responses as needed.
  • Coach and mentor others on engineering principles.
  • Perform project management and be able to effectively communicate project management principles to ancillary project managers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in an Engineering Discipline from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • 7+ years of experience in gas pipeline related design, specifically with gas transmission and high‑pressure distribution steel gas pipe.
  • Experience in managing, planning, executing pipeline/ILI engineering projects from scope development through construction and as‑built.
  • Must be detail‑oriented, organized, flexible, and able to effectively multi‑task while working in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Must have excellent time management and prioritization skills to ensure deadlines are met while providing accurate deliverables.
  • Must have demonstrated excellent human relations, influencing, communications and listening skills to deal effectively with all levels of clients, employees and management.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of industry codes and standards including ASME/ANSI/API/NFPA/CSA codes (ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, 49 CFR 192, 193 & 195), and NFPA 59A.
  • Project Management experience on small to medium projects.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Basic proficiency using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain PE certification within one year.
  • Experience working as a consulting engineer and/or in a seconded role.
  • 3+ years experience with plastic distribution gas pipeline design.
