Tutors help students strengthen their understanding of course content, develop effective study habits, and build confidence as independent learners. This position is student-centered and focuses on guiding students through the learning process rather than simply providing answers.
Tutors work one-on-one and, when needed, in small-group settings to help students review course material, prepare assignments and exams, improve problem-solving strategies, and apply effective academic skills. Tutors are expected to create a welcoming, supportive, and professional learning environment that encourages student success.

Essential Functions

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in subject area
  • Assist students with understanding course concepts, assignments, study strategies, and academic expectations
  • Use open-ended and guiding questions to encourage student thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning
  • Help students develop effective study habits, time management strategies, note-taking skills, and exam preparation techniques
  • Reinforce course content without completing assignments or providing answers for students
  • Complete required tutor training through the Chap Success Center’s certified tutor training program, recognized by the College Reading and Learning Association’s International Tutor Training Program Certification
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, student appointments, and required documentation
  • Uphold student confidentiality at all times
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources when additional support is needed
  • Assist with academic workshops, study sessions, events, and programming as needed
  • Collaborate with other tutors, faculty, and Chap Success Center staff to support student learning
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and productive tutoring environment
  • Assist with managing center expectations, including appropriate noise levels and shared-space use
  • Report concerns, student issues, or operational needs to the Director of Academic Engagement or designated staff member
  • Follow all Midland College policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Perform other duties related to Academic Engagement, tutoring services, and the Learning Resource Center as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Anatomy & Physiology and/or Biology, which may include successful completion of relevant coursework with a strong grade, equivalent field experience, professional experience, or other evidence of subject matter competence.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to explain course concepts clearly and patiently

  • Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and workstation
  • Frequent communication with students, employees, and visitors; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • May occasionally move boxes, materials, or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, extended hours, and Midland College or community events as neededÂ
