Job description

The Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for performing a variety of clinical activities necessary for the safe, accurate, and efficient treatment of oncology patients of The Cancer Center at Springfield Clinic.
Job Relationships
Reports to the Director of Clinical Pharmacy
Principal Responsibilities
  • Oversee the oncology drug distribution process, ensuring safe, accurate and timely delivery of chemotherapy to patients.  Supervise the review and verification of all chemotherapy orders.  Spend a significant amount of time in the infusion area working with staff, primarily mixing chemotherapy and supervising others involved in this process.
  • In a timely fashion, review and verify all chemotherapy and related medication orders to assure safe, accurate, appropriate and cost effective drug distribution and use.  Work with distributors and periodically review pricing to ensure that the practice is cost effective.
  • Oversee the management and distribution of oral chemotherapy drugs in the retail setting as we move forward with development of the pharmacy.
  • Understand and integrate the pharmacist role as an integral member of the health care team.  Monitor and direct work of support personnel, and reassign tasks and responsibilities as needed. May perform reviews, coaching or discipline of the support personnel in the Director's absence.
  • Demonstrate understanding of pharmacokinetic principles.
  • Lead, participate in, and contribute to educational forums with the pharmacy and nursing departments.  Provide continuing education to the medical staff, health care professionals and patients as needed.
  • Serve as a primary source of drug information for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals, as well as for patients.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training & accomplishments as required per policy.
  • Provide excellent customer service and adhere to SC Way customer service philosophy.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S. or PharmD degree.
  • Completion of a PGY1 residency with PGY2 oncology specialty residency desirable, but not required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a hospital or clinical practice setting desirable, but not required.  Oncology experience preferred.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Must possess an Illinois State Board of Pharmacy license in good standing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must be detail oriented.
Working Environment
  • Normal office and/or clinical setting.
  • Minimal travel required.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, blood/bodily fluids and/or infectious diseases.
