Job description

Duties * Serves as senior closed microphone reporter, utilizing a closed microphone and voice recognition technology to record high speed dictation at various types of informal and formal legal proceedings, such as courts-martial, grievance hearings, and investigation boards. * Transcribes, certifies transcripts and records of trials, ensuring that proper notations are made as to the swearing of court or board members, legal advisors, counsel, and witnesses. * Performs actions necessary to prepare for hearings and other proceedings.

* Uses varied and advanced functions of word processing software to create, format, modify, edit, and print a variety of transcripts, letters, reports, memos, and other legal documents. Requirements Conditions of employment * U.S. Citizenship Required * Males must be registered for Selective Service, see www.sss.gov * This position information reflects that this is a Non-Critical Sensitive (Secret Clearance) position; The work requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.

* Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid * This position is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program * Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required * Work will require travel away from the nonnal duty station on military or commercial aircraft, or by automobile * Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance * Employee must maintain current certifications * Disclosure of Political Appointments * Advance in hire may be authorized if there is demonstrable proof provided on your resume * May be required to work other than nonnal duty hours, which includes overtime, nights, holidays or weekend hours as workload demands * Five (5) years or more of court reporting experience is highly desired * Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period. * Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest. Qualifications The organizational goals and objectives of this position are: To provide recording and transcription services to support the civil and criminal law functions of the Air Force, and when directed, other agencies.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, for Clerical and Administrative Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-08, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes skill in operating closed microphone equipment and voice recognition technology sufficient to take high speed dictation (175 wpm) and provide verbatim recordings of courts-martial, grievance hearings, trials, and investigative hearings involving a wide range of highly specialized legal, medical, and/or technical terminology; knowledge of legal documents, processing requirements, and the protocols and methods used in legal proceedings ; knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proper format.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: * Knowledge of an extensive body of rules, procedures, formats, protocols and specialized terminology as they relate to formal legal proceedings, to prepare, process, and disseminate legal forms and documents. * Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and format to be able to accurately prepare and edit written correspondence and reports.

* Knowledge of word processing automation software functions to support office operations and produce a variety of textual documents, such as legal proceedings, letters, reports, memos, and form letters. * Skill to operate closed microphone equipment, or similar mechanical equipment, sufficient to take dictation at speeds of not less than 175 words per minute to reproduce material on a disk, cylinder, or similar device. * Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required.

* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to provide training and guidance to others. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
