Job description

Connexa Group is a professional services firm that believes the most valuable assets an organization has are its people. Our team members are dynamic, energetic, solution-based, and creative — but most importantly, they are the company.

We lead the industry by adopting technologies and finding creative solutions that improve efficiency and allow for a flexible work environment. Whether your career with Connexa is in the field or in the office, you will find that we are adaptive to the ever-changing workplace.

The Environmental Monitor / Coordinator is a key intermediate role within our Environmental Division, responsible for environmental monitoring and coordination on construction, mining, hydro, and pipeline projects. This role also participates as a Resource Specialist in biophysical assessment, wildlife, and fisheries work, acting as Field Lead as required, and provides mentorship to junior field staff.

The Work

Hybrid Office (30%) / Field (70%)

  • Focus: Coordinate and deliver environmental monitoring on multi-disciplinary construction, mining, hydro, and pipeline projects.
  • Shifts: Field shifts typically 2–10 days, with longer shifts possible. Overnight stays in hotels or camps are required.
  • Geographic Scope: Projects generally located in Central or Northern Alberta, with potential to travel elsewhere within Western Canada.
  • Monitoring & Coordination: Lead environmental monitoring activities on active construction sites, liaising directly with contractors and client representatives to ensure compliance with permits, approvals, and environmental protection plans.
  • Resource Specialist Duties: Participate as a Resource Specialist on biophysical assessments, wildlife surveys, water quality, and fisheries work, and act as Field Lead on these assignments from time to time.
  • Mentorship: Provide field-based mentorship and technical guidance to junior environmental staff, supporting their development in monitoring, assessment, and reporting skills.
  • Adverse Conditions: Be prepared to work in remote locations and challenging conditions such as muddy roads, steep terrain, dense vegetation, and snowy environments.
  • Physical Demands: Carry field equipment such as soil sampling tools and other required gear (up to 30 lb).

Technical Strength

Demonstrated intermediate-level expertise in one or more of the following, with working knowledge across most:

  • Environmental monitoring and construction inspection
  • Regulatory compliance monitoring (e.g., Environmental Protection Plan implementation)
  • Erosion and sedimentation control
  • Soil sampling (including both baseline soil and contaminated sampling)
  • Air quality
  • Wildlife sweeps (year-round identification of dens, nests, mineral licks, and other key features)
  • Water quality monitoring (turbidity)
  • Fish salvage and habitat assessment
  • Pipeline HDD monitoring

Equipment and Tools

  • Drive light-duty trucks, ATVs, UTVs, and trailers. A valid driver's licence is required.
  • Use navigational and data collection tools such as Garmin GPS, Avenza, Collector, and similar platforms.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Connexa's core values in all professional activities.
  • Collaborate with Connexa team members, client field representatives, contractors, and regulators.
  • Maintain strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey monitoring findings and compliance issues clearly to non-technical audiences.

Administrative and Support Tasks

  • Complete office reporting, QA/QC, data entry, and timely submission of field data.
  • Prepare monitoring reports and correspondence for client and regulatory review.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as needed.
  • Support recruitment and onboarding of junior field staff where applicable.

Availability

  • Excluding vacation or allotted personal days, field staff must be available for field work up to 20 days per month, including up to 2 weekends per month.
  • Excluding vacation or allotted personal days, 10–11 days off can be anticipated per month.

What You Bring to the Table

  • A diploma or bachelor's degree in conservation biology, land reclamation, environmental science, natural resource management, forestry, or a related field.
  • 5–9 years of relevant experience, with demonstrated intermediate-level technical and coordination capability.
  • Professional designation in BC or AB (e.g., RPBio, P.Ag., or equivalent) that qualifies the candidate as a Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), or clear eligibility to obtain one.
  • Electrofishing certification an asset.
  • Experience acting as a Field Lead.
  • Intermediate to advanced reporting abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and guide junior staff in the field.
  • The ability to liaise with clients, contractors, and regulators, and make professional in-field decisions independently.
  • A love for being on the road and working in both natural and construction environments is essential.
  • Physically fit, with the ability to walk extended distances in challenging field conditions.

This is a hybrid office and field position, combining virtual work from a home office with 2–10 day field shifts as project needs arise.
