What Does a Weekend Network Engineer Do?

The job duties of a weekend network engineer focus on providing network configuration, monitoring, design, and troubleshooting services for a company or organization during the weekend shift. Your responsibilities include performing system updates and data backup and recovery tasks. Some employers plan network changes during low usage periods on the weekend. A weekend engineer may install new software, change network infrastructure, and make connection improvements during these low usage periods. If connection problems arise, you have to troubleshoot and limit network downtime.

What are the typical challenges a Weekend Network Engineer faces, and how can they best prepare for them?

Weekend Network Engineers often handle critical maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting tasks during off-peak hours when network usage is lower. One of the main challenges is responding quickly to unexpected incidents with limited on-site support, so strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with remote troubleshooting tools are essential. Additionally, coordination with weekday teams for seamless handoffs and documentation is important to ensure ongoing network stability. Preparing by staying updated on the company's network architecture and maintaining clear communication channels can help engineers succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Network Engineer, you need expertise in networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and configuration, typically supported by a degree in IT or a related field and certifications like CCNA or CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, firewalls, routers, and switches is essential, as well as experience with ticketing systems. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently during non-standard hours make someone stand out in this position. These skills are crucial to ensure network reliability and swift issue resolution during weekends when support resources may be limited.

What is the difference between Weekend Network Engineer vs Part-Time Network Technician?

Job description

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of War and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needsโ€ฆ at the speed of relevance.

About the Role

Integer Technologies is forming a specialized team to conduct advanced science and technology research focused on the operationalization of passive acoustic soundscape data for Undersea Warfare (USW) and Seabed and Subsea Warfare (SSW). The Senior Systems Engineer will lead the development of advanced acoustic propagation, detection, and classification models for maritime environments. This role focuses on creating high fidelity simulations, analyzing real world acoustic datasets, and supporting uncrewed maritime systems through robust modeling frameworks. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to design tools that inform system performance, mission planning, and autonomous behaviors.

Integerโ€™s operating model is built on transforming science and technology research into deployable capabilities for the Department of War. Much of our work involves developing solutions for complex problems that currently have no known answers. As a result, candidates must be able to conduct original research, rapidly learn new concepts from a range of engineering disciplines, and document findings in a clear, accessible manner for both technical and nontechnical audiences in collaboration with the programโ€™s Principal Investigator.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Develop, validate, and maintain passive acoustic propagation and detection models for underwater environments.
  2. Analyze large acoustic datasets from UUVs, USVs, and fixed maritime sensors.
  3. Integrate acoustic models into digital twins and simulation environments used for autonomy development and mission rehearsal.
  4. Collaborate with software, autonomy, and systems engineers to ensure acoustic models interface cleanly with broader system architectures.
  5. Lead technical efforts, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to customer facing technical reports and presentations.
  6. Support proposal development and strategic planning for future acoustics focused R&D.
  7. Travel as required to execute research and product development. Travel is estimated to average less than 10%.
  8. Other duties as assigned, potentially supporting the Company as needed to develop new funded research and engineering projects.

Core Requirements

  • Masterโ€™s or PhD in Acoustics, Ocean Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Deep experience with underwater acoustics modeling (e.g., raytracing, normal modes, ambient noise modeling).
  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or C++.
  • Experience with real world acoustic data collection or processing.
  • U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • A PhD in Acoustics, Ocean Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with uncrewed maritime systems, machine learning for acoustic classification, or real time acoustic processing pipelines.
  • Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods. Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary which exceeds local & national industry averages.
  • Integer fully covers medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance costs for the employee and dependents. Integerโ€™s standard plan pays 100% of health insurance premiums for your entire family from a well-known national insurer, saving employees thousands of dollars annually.
  • Year-end performance-based bonuses.
  • 401(k) with company matching that vest immediately; no funny business.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Relocation assistance available.

Company Perks

  • Startup culture with the stability of a large company. Integerโ€™s business plan has years of time phased contracted work, alleviating the would-be risk from a traditional small company.
  • Direct access to company leadership, prioritization of people over process, and a stellar team with a shared desire for personal and professional growth.
  • Friendly atmosphere where people enjoy not only their work and what they are creating but enjoy helping each other as well.
  • Bottomless coffee.

*Open to various levels. If you meet the qualifications but not the years of experience, please still apply!
