Job description

HOURS AND PAY
Hours vary: daytime, evening and weekend shifts.  Ability to teach 2 - 3 classs a week and sub for other instructors as needed.  Pay will start at $25+ based on experience.  
POSITION SUMMARY
Fitness Group Instructor:
Group Exercise Instructors lead a group of participants through a series of movements and exercises. Group Exercise Instructors can lead many forms of fitness activities. Group Exercise workouts are accomplished with the instructor leading the class by doing the workout along with the participants who follow her/his lead.  We are looking for instructors to teach Total Body, Pilates and Yoga.  Instructors may need to audition, as part of the interview process.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Fitness Group Instructor:
  • Arrive early to each fitness session, at least 10 minutes before the start time of a session to prep, set-up, and greet participants.
  • Meet participants before and after class to answer questions and maintain a positive exercise experience.
  • Record attendance numbers for every class.
  • Communicate with the Fitness Supervisor when unsafe conditions occur or reporting equipment in need of repair.
  • Provide legally purchased music appropriate for the exercise format.
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members subbing whenever possible and assisting with special events as needed.
  • Supervise and instruct fitness classes as scheduled in accordance with all Lake Bluff Park District standards.
  • Must find coverage when unable to teach scheduled classes. 
  • Complete appropriate forms and reports for individual students, as applicable.
  • Ensure all class participants have paid to enter the class. 
  • Enforce all rules and regulations as indicated in manual or any other rules as assigned by the manager on duty.
  • Maintain a high level of readiness and be prepared to handle any emergency situations.
  • Have a total working and functional knowledge of safety, rescue, and first aid equipment located at the Lake Bluff Health and Fitness Center.
  • Attend and be held accountable for all information presented at all mandatory staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by a Supervisor.
   
 SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
Fitness Group Instructor:
The qualified candidate is required to achieve and maintain a minimum of one Group fitness certification from a nationally recognized organization and any combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
  • Ability to teach a variety of group fitness class formats, including but not limited to indoor cycling, cardio, senior fitness, resistance, and flexibility training.
  • Possession of CPR, AED and first aid certification.
  • Demonstrated maturity, reliability, initiative and responsibility.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service and the ability to positively interact with guests.
  • Ability to multi-task many variable duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to follow directions, communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Leadership capabilities and adaptability at the front of a class making each session fun and enjoyable while motivating participants.
  • The ability to move rhythmically to the beat of the music including the ability to incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitional movements from one pattern to another.
  • Organizational skills in creating combinations to be taught within the parameters of the format.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles.
  • A highly sufficient degree of energy and have the endurance to complete each fitness class.
  • Employee must use good safety awareness and judgment in all aspects of the position.
  • Employee must maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers and the general public.  
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally must aide or assist participants. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have a high degree of energy, be physically fit, and have the endurance to teach classes.
