Weekend Millwork information

What is a weekend millwork?

Weekend Millwork jobs involve working with wood and other materials to create custom furniture, cabinetry, and architectural elements, typically during weekends. These roles may include tasks such as cutting, shaping, assembling, and finishing wood products in a workshop or on-site setting. Weekend Millwork positions are ideal for individuals seeking flexible, part-time work or those who want to gain experience in woodworking outside of regular weekday hours. Responsibilities often require attention to detail, the ability to read blueprints, and proficiency with hand and power tools.

What are the typical responsibilities and work schedule for a weekend millwork?

In a Weekend Millwork role, you can expect to be involved in tasks such as fabricating, assembling, and finishing wood products or custom cabinetry, often using both hand tools and machinery. Your schedule will primarily focus on weekend shifts, which may include early mornings or late evenings depending on production needs. The work environment is usually team-oriented, requiring close collaboration with other craftsmen, supervisors, and sometimes designers to ensure projects meet quality standards and deadlines. This role is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience in woodworking while balancing other weekday commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend millwork, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Millwork, you need strong woodworking skills, familiarity with millwork processes, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with woodworking machinery, hand tools, measurement systems, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications are typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective teamwork are key soft skills that help ensure quality and safety. These abilities are crucial because they ensure precise craftsmanship, maintain a safe work environment, and enable efficient collaboration during limited weekend shifts.

Job description

Monkey in the MetalArchitectural Millwork & Custom Shop Carpenter

Baltimore, Maryland | Full-Time

Build One-of-a-Kind Pieces - Not the Same Thing Every Day

Monkey in the Metal is looking for a skilled, hands-on Architectural Millwork & Custom Shop Carpenter to join our Baltimore fabrication team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in cabinetmaking, architectural millwork, custom woodworking, furniture fabrication, finish carpentry, or a similar shop environment who enjoys building unique pieces and solving new challenges.

We don't operate like a production cabinet shop where the same components are built repeatedly. Our projects range from custom furniture and architectural features to retail fixtures, signage, artwork, and specialty installations.

If you enjoy taking a project from drawings and raw materials to a finished piece you can be proud of, we want to hear from you.

About Monkey in the Metal

Founded in 2012, Monkey in the Metal is a Baltimore-based custom fabrication company specializing in furniture, fixtures, architectural treatments, signage, artwork, and specialty fabrication.

We work with architects, designers, contractors, developers, and commercial clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic to turn creative concepts into finished pieces.

Our shop combines woodworking, metal fabrication, problem-solving, and craftsmanship to produce projects that rarely look exactly like the one before them.

What You'll Do

As part of our fabrication team, you will help build and finish custom pieces from concept through completion.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Fabricating and assembling custom cabinetry, millwork, furniture, fixtures, and architectural components
  • Reading drawings, measurements, cut lists, and project specifications
  • Cutting, shaping, fitting, assembling, and finishing wood components
  • Operating woodworking machinery, power tools, and hand tools safely and accurately
  • Preparing materials and components for fabrication and installation
  • Working with laminates, hardwoods, plywood, sheet goods, and other fabrication materials
  • Performing detailed fitting, sanding, finishing, and final adjustments
  • Checking dimensions and finished work for accuracy and quality
  • Collaborating with other fabricators to solve unusual construction and design challenges
  • Assisting with projects that combine wood, metal, and other materials
  • Maintaining an organized, efficient, and safe shop environment
Who We're Looking For

You may come from a cabinet shop, millwork company, custom furniture shop, woodworking operation, exhibit/display fabricator, finish carpentry company, or specialty fabrication environment.

We're particularly interested in someone who:

  • Has hands-on experience with cabinetry, millwork, woodworking, furniture fabrication, or shop carpentry
  • Understands how pieces are built, fitted, assembled, and finished
  • Is comfortable working from measurements, drawings, and specifications
  • Can safely operate common woodworking equipment and shop tools
  • Pays close attention to dimensions, fit, finish, and craftsmanship
  • Is comfortable working on custom projects where some problem-solving is required
  • Can work independently while collaborating effectively with a small shop team
  • Takes pride in producing clean, professional finished work
  • Is dependable and able to follow a project through completion
  • Has a valid driver's license and reliable transportation

Experience with metal fabrication, welding, installation, CNC equipment, finishing, or other specialty fabrication techniques is a plus, but is not required.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Starting pay: $28 per hour (more DOE)
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Full-time employment
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Week-long company closure between Christmas and New Year's
What Makes This Opportunity Different

This isn't a repetitive production woodworking position.

One project might involve custom architectural millwork. The next could be a retail fixture, piece of furniture, decorative installation, sign, or one-of-a-kind architectural feature.

You'll have the opportunity to use your existing woodworking and fabrication skills while continuing to learn new materials, techniques, and approaches.

We're looking for someone who enjoys the craftsmanship and the problem-solving that comes with custom work.
