Weekend Mechanical Design Engineer information

What does a weekend mechanical design engineer do?

A Weekend Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical components and systems, typically during weekend shifts. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create blueprints and prototypes, collaborate with other engineers, and ensure that designs meet safety and performance standards. Working on weekends allows companies to maximize productivity and meet tight project deadlines. These engineers often troubleshoot mechanical problems and implement solutions while maintaining documentation and adhering to industry regulations.

How does the weekend schedule for a mechanical design engineer typically affect team collaboration and project timelines?

As a Weekend Mechanical Design Engineer, you may work on projects during off-peak hours, which can offer focused time for design tasks with fewer interruptions. However, effective communication with weekday team members is essential for seamless handoffs and progress tracking. Many organizations use collaborative tools and detailed documentation to ensure that weekend engineers stay aligned with the broader team and meet project milestones. Proactive updates and participation in virtual meetings can help integrate your contributions into the overall workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend mechanical design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Weekend Mechanical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and simulation software, along with knowledge of industry standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, time management, and teamwork skills help you handle tight deadlines and collaborate effectively during weekend shifts. These competencies ensure efficient project delivery, high-quality designs, and seamless workflow even outside standard business hours.

Job description

SSI Fabricated Design Engineer

Are you a hands-on engineer who thrives on solving complex piping and fluid system design challenges? Join our team and play a key role in delivering critical pipe, valve, & fitting (PVF) and fluid handling systems—from initial quotation through final engineering—for customers across a broad range of industries. Working alongside a collaborative engineering group, you’ll have the autonomy to own designs from concept to completion while ensuring full conformance to industry Codes & Standards. This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering and is based in Middletown, Ohio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review customer specifications and technical requirements during the quotation process to ensure scope clarity and design feasibility.
  • Design custom strainers, pressure vessels, and related piping assemblies in accordance with applicable Codes and Standards (ASME, API, ASTM).
  • Independently develop engineering models and drawings (layouts, outlines, P&ID, detail drawings, bills of materials, etc.) using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Performing and verifying design calculations for oil & lube, chilled water, potable & fresh water, and aqueous foam systems.
  • Assist in preparing accurate cost estimates and competitive quotations by contributing material takeoffs, engineering hours, and technical input to support the Sales team.
  • Create and maintain item masters and bills of materials in the MRP system to support accurate procurement and production planning.
  • Serve as a technical resource and collaborator across Customers, Sales, Purchasing, Quality, Manufacturing, and Vendors to resolve engineering questions and drive projects forward.
  • Participate in project meetings and technical discussions with customers as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in piping design, PVF, or related equipment engineering such as pumps, valves, or fluid system components; new graduates with relevant co-op or internship experience are encouraged to apply
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, including 3D modeling and detail drawing creation
  • Basic knowledge of piping, fittings, valves, strainers, and related PVF components
  • Familiarity with carbon steel, stainless steel, and common alloy materials used in fabricated equipment
  • Experience using ERP/MRP business software for item masters, BOMs, and order management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Infrequent travel required, primarily domestic to the Cleveland, OH area
  • Due to the nature of our work and U.S. export control regulations (ITAR), applicants must be U.S. citizens

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in or around a fabrication or welding shop environment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical customer specifications
  • Knowledge of welding and machining processes as they apply to fabricated equipment
  • Familiarity with ASME B31 piping codes and/or ASME Section VIII pressure vessel design
  • Working knowledge of industry standards such as API, ASME, ASTM, and PIP
  • Basic electrical knowledge and ability to read wiring schematics

If you’re a motivated piping engineer looking to grow your career in a team that values technical excellence and cross-functional collaboration, we’d love to hear from you.
