Job description

This position is responsible for providing repair and maintenance to a fleet of snow plows, salters, dump trucks, heavy and light trucks and loaders, etc. This position includes diagnosis of causes of breakdown, ordering required parts, removal, rework and installation of various engine and chassis components, as well as implementing and /or modifying maintenance schedules. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the Mechanic will be expected to determine the nature and extent of the necessary repairs.

Job Duties:

  • Repair and adjust hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and any other necessary mechanical components
  • Inspect, repair and adjust gasoline and diesel-powered units
  • Diagnose defects in heavy duty equipment
  • Perform mechanical repairs on equipment in the shop and road calls when required
  • Operate automotive servicing equipment
  • Installation of new and added-on equipment
  • Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and diagnostics
  • Repair cooling, and lubrication systems
  • Install and align engines and machinery
  • Repair mechanical transmissions, drive-trains and final drives
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance
  • Clean, lubricate and perform other maintenance work
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and repair techniques
  • Other mechanical repair work as required
  • Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances
  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting

Requirements:

Preference will be given to those with the following:

  • Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
  • Appropriate credentials and certifications
  • 310T or 421A License
  • 5-10 years experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Mathematics, oral and written communication skills at the trade journeyman level
  • Ability to work independently in a busy environment
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations
  • Working knowledge of related maintenance and repair practices
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic pumps, motors, and air brake systems
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all time
