Familiarity with manual lathes, milling machines, calipers, micrometers, and sometimes CNC basics is important, along with adherence to safety standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong time management are crucial soft skills for delivering precise and efficient work during limited weekend shifts. These skills ensure high-quality parts production, workplace safety, and meeting tight deadlines in a manufacturing environment.

Job description

Description:

We’re hiring a MANUAL Machinist to support our service and repair operations. This is a precision machining role within an industrial, OEM-authorized repair environment - not a production or CNC position. You will be responsible for setting up and operating manual machines to repair or fabricate components for industrial pumps and rotating equipment. Much of the work involves one-off parts, reverse engineering worn components, and holding tight tolerances on critical fits.

About Tencarva

Tencarva Machinery is a distributor, engineering and design partner, and OEM-authorized repair network within the process equipment/flow control market. With 38 locations across 17 states, Tencarva provides end-to-end, whole-system solutions for over 18,000 active customers across many verticals, including industrial, municipal water/wastewater, power generation, oil/gas, mining/aggregates, and automotive. Our service offerings include system analysis and design, applications engineering, custom fabrication of equipment packages, automation & controls, equipment remanufacturing, and thermal hard coatings. tencarva.com

The Role

This is a hands-on manual machining role in a repair shop environment. You’ll work from worn components, sketches, and drawings to machine parts used in the rebuild of pumps and rotating equipment. This is not repetitive production work. Each job can be different, requiring careful setup, measurement, and adjustment to achieve proper fit and function.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Set up and operate manual lathes, vertical mills (Bridgeport), boring mills, and VTLs
  • Machine shafts, sleeves, bushings, and other components used in rotating equipment
  • Perform turning, boring, grooving, threading, and milling operations
  • Hold tight tolerances on bearing fits and critical surfaces
  • Measure and verify work using micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, and precision tools
  • Reverse engineer parts from worn components, sketches, or limited documentation
  • Select tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material and application
  • Inspect finished components to ensure accuracy and quality
  • Work closely with mechanics to ensure proper fit and function of machined parts
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

Why Join Tencarva

  • Day shift, Monday–Friday schedule
  • Shop-based role - no production line work
  • Annual Incentive
  • Quarterly Shop Incentives
  • Profit Sharing (via 401k)
  • Paid Time Off (plus 10 paid Holidays)
  • Stable, established organization with no history of layoffs
  • Real-world machining work - not repetitive production

Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.

Requirements:

What You’ll Need to Be Successful (Required)

  • Experience setting up and operating manual machining equipment (lathe and mill required)
  • VTL (vertical turret lathe) experience required
  • Ability to independently set up and complete jobs from start to finish
  • Experience holding tight tolerances (typically ±.002” or better, depending on application)
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints
  • Strong problem-solving ability when working from worn parts, limited documentation, or general descriptions

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience with boring mills or large shaft work
  • Experience in a job shop or repair environment (vs production machining)
  • Exposure to pumps or rotating equipment

Relevant Experience / Key Skills

Manual machining, engine lathe, Bridgeport mill, vertical turret lathe (VTL), boring mill, precision machining, tight tolerances, 4-jaw chuck, shaft repair, reverse engineering, industrial repair, job shop machining, rotating equipment.
