Position Summary
The Swanstrom Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the evolution of HIV and its implications for antiviral drug resistance, HIV transmission, and clinical assessment using cutting-edge viral genomics, next-generation sequencing, and computational approaches.
Our laboratory studies HIV evolution across the spectrum of infection, from within-host viral diversity to population-level transmission dynamics. We integrate molecular virology, genomics, bioinformatics, machine learning, and translational HIV research to develop innovative sequencing technologies and computational tools for studying HIV drug resistance, infection timing, and viral evolution. Current projects leverage unique clinical cohorts from North Carolina and cohorts managed by international collaborators in Malawi to address fundamental questions in HIV pathogenesis and improve public health surveillance and patient care.
Candidates with backgrounds in virology, computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, or related disciplines seeking to generate high-impact research and establish a career in academic biomedical research are encouraged to apply.
Current projects in the laboratory include:
- HIV-1 evolution within and between infected individuals
- Development of next-generation sequencing assays for HIV molecular surveillance
- Machine learning approaches for estimating HIV infection timing and viral evolution
- HIV drug resistance evolution
- Viral population genetics, phylodynamics, and molecular epidemiology
- Bioinformatics and computational tool development for viral genomics and precision public health
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD in Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field
