Position Summary This position is responsible for performing maintenance, repair, and construction tasks related to streets, drainage, and alley systems. This is a non-supervisory position that requires the use of various tools and equipment to ensure public infrastructure is safe and well-maintained. The role involves both independent work and collaboration with a team to complete assigned projects effectively.

Essential Job Funtions Perform general maintenance on concrete streets, asphalt streets, alleys, drainage ditches, and storm drainage systems. Install, maintain, and repair concrete, asphalt, signs, and other infrastructure. Transport equipment, supplies, and debris to and from job sites.

Maintain city common areas, including trimming trees, hedges, and bushes using power mowers and weed eaters. Read and interpret written job instructions, maps, and plans. Cut, collect, and dispose of tree limbs, weeds, trash, litter, debris, and bulk items set out by residents.

Conduct preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; report necessary repairs. Operate a variety of light and medium construction equipment, including backhoes, loaders, trenchers, augers, concrete saws, and motor graders. Ensure proper maintenance and servicing of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.

Maintain and clean shop tools, equipment, and facilities. Complete and maintain logs, reports, and documents regarding materials used, equipment operations, and project status. Set up traffic warning devices and barricades, ensuring proper placement and visibility for safety.

Work as part of a crew or independently while maintaining and repairing streets. Receive and address verbal or written work orders and complaints. Break and remove pavement and sidewalks using pneumatic tools; install and stripe speed humps.

Clean and paint curbs, fire lanes, and crosswalks. Install holiday decorations as assigned. Remove ice and snow from public roadways, sidewalks, and parking lots.

Work holidays, evenings, and weekends as needed; subject to after-hours emergency call-outs. Rotate on-call duty for weekend coverage of city parks, streets, and emergency situations. Public Works is considered an emergency service.

Employees may be required to respond/report to work during inclement weather or other declared disasters to provide basic services. Maintain punctuality and reliable attendance. Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION-SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS Drainage Assist with maintaining stormwater drainage systems, including silt removal, bar ditch maintenance, erosion repair, and debris retrieval. Repair storm drains, inlets, guardrails, and bridges as needed. Streets Assist with street maintenance tasks, including grading, filling, concrete finishing, and constructing sidewalks and storm drains.

Implement temporary and permanent asphalt repairs on streets, alleys, and sidewalks. This position is designated as safety-sensitive and is subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of safety procedures related to equipment operation and public works maintenance.

Proficiency in using hand and power tools for various tasks. Understanding of federal, state, and local vehicle ordinances. Basic knowledge of construction practices and materials.

Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to complete projects safely and efficiently. Skill in maintaining and operating small to medium-sized equipment and trucks.

Ability to interpret maps, plans, and written instructions. Strong teamwork and communication skills. Capability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

Willingness to learn and follow instructions effectively. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with the public, city staff, and external partners. Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered. Must pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and MVR check. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid Texas Class B CDL.

Routine tasks include handling tools, operating construction equipment, and driving public works vehicles.

The position requires manual dexterity for using hand tools, power tools, and office equipment. The role also demands strong multitasking abilities, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations. Work may include exposure to hazardous materials, loud noise, and physical risks from heavy machinery.

Emergency on-call hours may be required, with response times ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour. WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This role involves a mix of indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions. Position must frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 100 lbs.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Standard office equipment (computer, phone, fax, copier, printer, scanner). Various construction and maintenance tools, including saws, jackhammers, backhoes, dump trucks, trenchers, service trucks, street sweepers, and crack sealers. OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES This position requires strong reading, writing, and mathematical skills to interpret maps, project plans, and work orders while performing accurate calculations related to measurements and materials.

The Crew Member must be a self-starter, capable of working independently while ensuring compliance with state, local, and departmental policies and regulations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word and Outlook) and other relevant software is essential for maintaining records and communicating effectively with supervisors and team members. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are required to interact professionally with the public, city personnel, and coworkers.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED A hard hat, safety boots, safety vests, hearing protection, gloves, safety harness, safety rope, manual mechanical winch, glasses, goggles, and confined space equipment are required.
