Job Description

Job Title: Tabletop Gaming Library Attendant

Division: Gaming
Department: Tabletop Gaming
Reports to: Tabletop Gaming Manager
Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer
Location: Remote with occasional in-person meetings (location-dependent), may be expected to be on-site during convention dates, including the day before and the day after for setup and teardown.

About Anthro SoCal

Anthro SoCal is a community-driven convention celebrating furry fandom through art, performance, gaming, and social connection. Our success depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteer team. Anthro SoCal was formally known as Another Furry Con in 2024-2025.

Position Overview

The Tabletop Gaming Library Attendant is an interactive, front-facing staff member responsible for creating a welcoming, organized, and engaging experience within the Tabletop Open Play area. Operating directly under the Tabletop Gaming Manager, you will act as a board game guide, library tracker, and helpful ambassador for the convention. Your primary duty is to help attendees discover, set up, and play a massive library of games-securely renting out library stock provided by our external tabletop vendor, tracking assets through our digital scanning system, and keeping the open play space inviting. If you are a friendly, personable gamer who loves sharing your passion for tabletop gaming and wants to represent the convention with pride, this role is a perfect match.

Time Commitment
  • Year-round: None
  • As convention approaches: Attend online staff meetings and trainings when requested
  • Convention weekend: On-site presence is required with flexible hours
  • Pre and post-convention: On-site presence may be required to assist with setup and teardown activities the day before and the day after the event
Key Responsibilities

Your shift will center around attendee hospitality, board game library management, and asset tracking:

  • Informed Guest Services & Decorum: Act as a welcoming ambassador for the convention. You will answer reasonable attendee questions with friendly, informed responses, and guide more complex or specialized questions to the appropriate leadership. At all times, you are expected to carry yourself with the high standard of decorum, warmth, and professionalism that befits Anthro SoCal's promise to host an excellent event
  • Game Facilitation & Teaching: Directly assist attendees in discovering, setting up, and understanding games in the tabletop open play area. This includes explaining rules, answering specific questions about various board or card games, and utilizing your passion for gaming to help attendees find the perfect game for their group
  • Library Game Rental & Tracking: Securely manage and rent out games from the Tabletop Department's dedicated library (provided by our partner tabletop vendor)
  • Scanning & Inventory Logging: Scan and log attendee badge information and game inventory barcodes using the designated tracking system before releasing games, ensuring we maintain real-time tracking of the location and condition of the tabletop assets
  • Collaborative Team Support: Keep a proactive eye on the room, assisting fellow tabletop team members, tidying up abandoned gaming tables, managing check-out queues during peak hours, and taking on other duties as needed to keep the room operating smoothly
Qualifications

Required:

  • Outstanding Decorum & Hospitality: A genuinely friendly, patient, and personable attitude. You must be eager to interact with the public and maintain a highly professional demeanor as a representative of the convention
  • Tabletop & Board Game Knowledge: A healthy passion for and strong knowledge base of modern tabletop board games, card games, or role-playing games to help recommend and explain games easily to attendees
  • Tech-Savvy Asset Tracking: Comfort using digital barcode scanning systems, tablets, or inventory logging software to accurately record check-ins and check-outs
  • Punctuality & Reliability: Strict adherence to your scheduled shift times. The tabletop room is a heavily trafficked social space, and the library must remain fully staffed to prevent checkout delays

Preferred:

  • Rules Explanation & Teaching Experience: Prior experience explaining complex board game rules or teaching games to beginners in a clear, concise, and encouraging manner
  • Customer Service or Library Experience: Prior experience working in a library, retail environment, equipment check-out desk, game store, or front-facing customer support role
  • De-escalation Skills: The ability to stay completely calm, polite, and unbothered when managing packed check-out lines or handling crowded, high-energy gaming areas
What We Offer

While this is an unpaid volunteer position, we provide:

  • Free convention membership and staff perks
  • Staff hospitality (meals/snacks during your shifts at-con)
  • Exclusive staff events and social opportunities
  • Recognition in convention materials
  • Experience in event management and team leadership
  • A supportive, creative community environment
  • References and recommendation letters upon request

Anthro SoCal is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, experiences, and skill levels. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
