Job description

Join a dynamic healthcare team in the Pacific Northwest region as an ASCP Medical Lab Technician on a PRN basis. This role involves comprehensive participation in all phases of clinical laboratory testing within a collaborative hospital environment.
Job Summary
Responsible for pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory functions, including specimen processing, instrument operation, quality control, and result evaluation. The position requires active involvement in procedure reviews, training, inventory management, and quality assurance activities.
Key Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen collection, processing, and testing both on-site and for reference laboratories.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments, ensuring accuracy through standards and controls.
  • Evaluate test results for accuracy and reasonableness considering patient factors.
  • Identify and investigate unusual or critical results prior to reporting.
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance and proficiency testing.
  • Complete mandatory training and competency assessments annually.
  • Contribute to special projects and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree required.
  • At least one year of relevant work experience preferred; new graduates will be considered.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current ASCP certification or equivalent.
  • CPR or BLS certification within three months of hire.
  • Phlebotomy license is optional.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Quality Control Westgard Rules and documentation.
  • Ability to recognize and troubleshoot unlikely results.
  • Proficient in English and basic computer skills.
  • Competent in body fluid cell counts, hematology manual differentials, urine microscopy, blood banking basics, and gram staining.
  • Effective communication with healthcare providers, nurses, and patients.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to variable shifts.

Physical Requirements
Includes frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting or carrying of items up to 35 lbs. Normal vision, hearing, and speech capabilities required.
Work Environment
