POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs routine laboratory analytical procedures and QC related to general laboratory testing. Receives, processes, and distributes human biological specimens. Performs various functions, including data entry, rapid kit testing, loading samples onto waived analyzers, preparing slides for staining, and transport to other laboratories under COLA/CLIA regulations.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follows established policies and procedures as they relate to the Laboratory.
  • Completes venipunctures and/or finger-sticks on patients in all age groups.
  • Receives, collects, and labels all specimen types as appropriate while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Completes waived test procedures following written procedures conforming to current standards and manufacturers’ recommendations.
  • Completes and maintains QC data for waived applications at facility.
  • Receive, centrifuge, accession, process, and transport specimens.
  • Maintains competency with instrumentation set-up and maintenance.
  • Maintain, clean, and sterilize work areas while following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
  • Perform clerical duties which may include answering phones, patient data entry/verifying, ordering tests, maintaining clinical documents, and filing.
  • Performs supply inventory as assigned to prevent shortages in assigned work areas.
  • Notifies supervisor promptly of customer concerns, unsafe conditions, and malfunctioning instruments or test procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge and training on equipment and procedures.
  • Maintains competence in computer skills pertaining to order entry/comprehension, collections, result entry, patient report retrieval, reporting tasks, EMR resolutions and billing trailers.
  • Assist supervisor in meeting department regulatory agency requirements (COLA, etc.)
  • Maintains basic knowledge of medical coding and keeps abreast of annual changes and updates.
  • Attends department meetings and clinic required meetings.
  • Consistently displays a positive attitude and a personal commitment to excellence with customer satisfaction and technical development.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Education/Experience:

  • 1+ year of successful phlebotomy experience with straight needles in fast paced setting.
  • Proficient with the order of draw.
  • Fulfill educational requirements consistent with classification for waived testing as defined under the CLIA '88 regulations.
  • Certification specializing in Phlebotomy credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or similar.
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant credentialed from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or similar preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association recognized Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This position on occasion will require medium lifting generally not more than 50 lbs. Maximum with frequent lifting and / or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to exercise good judgment and positively influence and lead others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. Repetitive motion of upper body is required for extended use of machines and computers. Flexible working hours, dependability, and timeliness.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position in an outpatient medical office setting with a working schedule from 7am to 7pm and a 1-hour lunchbreak. The Medical Lab Assistant may need to be available on rotating weekends (~1 weekend a month), with 1+ day(s) off during the week.

Travel:

This position may require travel.

Work Environment:

Environmentally controlled medical environment. Fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent situations. Frequent exposure to bodily fluids. Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a laboratory and medical office environment.
