Description
In conjunction with the ACHA Head Ice Hockey Coach/Recreation Assistant and Associate Director for Intramural, Recreational and Club Sports this person will be responsible for the management and administration of a competitive Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) program; consisting of a developmental plan for practices, recruiting, travel arrangements, game planning and general coaching of a successful Ice Hockey program
Examples of Duties
  • Schedules and conducts regular practice sessions in and out of season, as permitted Upstate New York Collegiate Hockey League, Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), USA Hockey and St. Bonaventure University. Develops and implements strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and a team.

  • Oversees the recruitment and selection of student-athletes. Ensures compliance with the Amateur Athletic Union guidelines for contacting and entertaining prospects.

  • Monitors the eligibility status and promotes the academic progress of student-athletes by working closely with the Associate Director of Intramurals, Recreation and Club Sports.

  • Arranges a competitive event schedule, in conjunction with the assigned administrator.

  • Supervises assistant coaches, part-time assistant coaches and graduate assistants if applicable. Provides orientation, training and guidance as needed.

Typical Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor Degree preferred
Years of Experience:
Two (2) to five (5) years coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level and/or Junior Hockey League /or collegiate playing experience.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
Certification and/or Licensure:
Valid Drivers License
Level 200 USA Hockey Coaching Certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful University community.
  • Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the University.
  • Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of specific sport skills and player development as well as strategic team development.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students and constituent groups outside the University to support the continued enhancement and development of the specific sport.
  • Knowledge of USA Hockey and Amateur Athletic Union rules and regulations.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential material, understanding that all University information should only be disclosed to others who have a need to know, for legitimate business or educational reasons. Have the ability to exercise and apply sound judgment and decision making skills as well as the ability to maintain integrity and confidentiality of data.
  • Ability to successfully recruit and retain student athletes. Makes public appearances on behalf of the University as well as create substantial support for program through ambitious marketing and community service efforts.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and have the self-motivation and the ability to stay current with emerging technologies.
  • Ability to establish and nurture effective working relationships with associates, colleagues, students and members of the University staff. Maintain professionalism when dealing with all staff and other customers while fostering positive working relationships.

Working Conditions / Physical requirements
  • Physically able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • While performing required job tasks, physically able to remain seated, frequently to continuously.
  • Frequent walking, standing, and other physical activities will be required 75% of the time.
  • While performing required job tasks, physically able to remain standing for an extended period of time
  • Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform typing, operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to indoor/outdoor environment/climate changes.
  • Flexibility to work long, irregular hours to include evening, weekend and holiday hours.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license and able to drive a 12-person van long distances.
  • Availability for extensive team travel locally and nationally.
