THE POSITION
The daily duties of the position may consist of the following: completing data entries into the Jail Management System, maintaining daily logs, completing intake questionnaires, housing classification, and thorough record keeping; completing safety checks in the jail as well as upon intake of a detainee; fingerprint and booking detainees using a Livescan machine. Jailers serve inmate meals, conduct showers, inmate searches, and maintain a safe jail environment in accordance to Title 15 BSCC Standards. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential qualities of a Jailer.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics or skill sets:

• Current or previous experience working in a Custody Facility
• Previous experience working with or volunteering with a Law Enforcement Agency
• Experience with Mental Health services, either in a paid or volunteer role
• Time Management
• Experience with de-escalation

**While on training, incumbents of this position will be assigned a Thursday - Saturday, 5 PM - 5 AM schedule while with their assigned Trainer, and Monday - Thursday between the hours of 9 AM and 7 PM while assigned to the Jailer Supervisor. These assignments will occur separately, and the incumbent will be notified prior. Once training is complete, there will be no set schedule for this position. This is an on-call, as-needed position that works nights, weekends, and holidays.**

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Experience

• One year of experience working in a Custody Facility is highly desirable.
• Either paid or volunteer experience with a Law Enforcement Agency is highly desirable.
• Experience with Mental Health services, either in a paid or volunteer role, is highly desirable.

Education

• Highschool Diploma or GED required.
• Associate of Arts in Administration of Justice, Police Science, Jail Management, or a related field is highly desirable.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
License

• Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at time of application and as a continuing condition of employment.

Certificates

• Completion of PC 832 and a core course on PC 6035 is desirable.
  • If appointee has not completed both courses at the time of appointment, appointee must complete PC832 within 90 days of initial appointment and meet the minimum selection and training standards prescribed by the Board of Corrections pursuant to PC 6035 (Corrections Officer Core Course) within one year of appointment.
• Valid CPR & First Aid Certificate issued by American Red Cross highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of -English usage; spelling, grammar, and punctuation; mathematics; modern office equipment operation; principles and procedures of record keeping.Skills/Abilities -Operate modern office equipment; understand and follow written and oral instructions; read, understand, learn, interpret and comply with Federal, State, County, City and Departmental codes, regulations, laws, policies and procedures; write clear and accurate reports; deal effectively and tactfully with the public and jail inmates; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work a variety of shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; think and act quickly in emergency situations; use good judgment in dealing with inmates and the public; analyze situations accurately.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This position requires heavy lifting, carrying, climbing, running, and exposure to potentially hazardous situations and environmental conditions.
