Job description

Mammography Technologists operate a mammography unit to produce images of the breasts for diagnostic purposes under the direction of a physician. They explain the procedure to patients, position and immobilize the patient’s breast in the unit, and observe the scanning process. This involves monitoring the video display of the area being scanned and adjusting the density or contrast to improve picture quality. Mammography Technologists then review and evaluate the film or image recording plate to determine if the images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Throughout this whole process, Mammography Technologists use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and caregivers.  

A caregiver in this position works 7:00am—3:30pm or 8:00am—4:30pm. No holiday, evenings or weekends. 


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Review mammography requisition and computer exam forms to determine the type of exam required. 

  • Accurately position patients, determine the exposure factors, and operate mammography equipment according to established procedures to obtain a high-quality image. 

  • Review processed images to determine quality and the need for additional images. 

  • Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment, and the exam to ensure understanding and cooperation. 

  • Ensure patients' safety and comfort during and after the exam. 

  • Acquire, archive, transmit, and print images via CAD and PACS. 

  • Complete after-hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork. 

  • Report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator. 

  • Process billing via RIS. 

  • Assist with all policies and procedures required by local, state, and federal law, and with compliance or credentialing bodies (ACR, MQSA, Medicare, Medicaid, FDA, etc.) 

  • Assist with instrument calibration and records to ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements. 

  • Perform equipment checks to assure proper function of and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions. 

  • Ensure exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies. 

  • Provide teaching and mentoring to new hires and students. 

  • Strive to learn new technical information and skills through attendance of periodic in-service programs and participation in professional affiliation sessions. 

  • Rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites, and/or locations. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) approved school of Radiologic Technology 

  • Registered Technologist credentialed by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. R.T.(R) (ARRT), in good standing 

  • Certification in Mammography: R.T.(R) (M) (ARRT) 

  • Current state licensure (RL) required prior to employment 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross 

  • Successful completion of 40 hours of mammography training 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • One year of experience as a General Radiologic Technologist 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $33.50

Maximum hourly: $48.50

A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education. The pay range displayed does not include any applicable pay practices (e.g., shift differentials, overtime, etc.).
