Weekend Industrial Design involves working primarily on weekends with limited hours, often in freelance or consulting roles. Part-Time Industrial Design offers more flexible scheduling, including weekdays, suitable for those balancing other jobs or commitments. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but differ mainly in scheduling flexibility and usage context.

Is there a demand for weekend industrial designers?

Weekend industrial designers are in limited demand, as most design roles are full-time and project-based. However, freelance or part-time opportunities may exist for those with specialized skills in CAD software and prototyping, especially in startups or small businesses seeking flexible schedules.

Where do weekend industrial designers get paid the most?

Weekend industrial designers tend to earn higher wages in regions with a strong manufacturing or design industry presence, such as major metropolitan areas or regions with a high cost of living. Compensation can also vary based on experience, specialization, and the complexity of projects, with freelance or contract work often paying more per hour than part-time employment. Overall, locations with a higher demand for industrial design services typically offer higher pay rates for weekend work.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
We're hiring a Service & Repair Supervisor to lead our Indianapolis shop - someone who knows pumps, understands how repairs actually get done, and can lead from the floor. This is a hands-on role managing a small team of mechanics while still working alongside them on rebuilds, troubleshooting, and occasional field service work at customer sites.
*This role is with Fischer Process Industries , a division of Tencarva Machinery Company .
About Fischer & Tencarva
Fischer Process Industries , founded in 1957, is a distributor and service provider of pumps and fluid process equipment, with locations in Loveland/Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Owensboro, KY. Fischer became part of Tencarva in 2022.
Tencarva Machinery is a distributor, engineering and design partner, and OEM-authorized repair network within the process equipment/flow control market. With 38 locations across 17 states, Tencarva provides end-to-end, whole-system solutions for over 18,000 active customers across many verticals, including industrial, municipal water/wastewater, power generation, oil/gas, mining/aggregates, and automotive. Our service offerings include system analysis and design, applications engineering, custom fabrication of equipment packages, automation & controls, equipment remanufacturing, and thermal hard coatings. tencarva.com
The Role
You'll be leading the day-to-day work in the shop while still turning wrenches alongside your team. This role is heavily involved in teardown, inspection, troubleshooting, rebuilds, and testing of industrial pumps and rotating equipment. You'll also be responsible for setting the tone on the shop floor - coaching/developing mechanics, keeping work moving, and making sure repairs are done the right way. While the role is primarily shop-based, there will also be occasional light field service work at customer facilities.
Equipment Typically Includes
  • Self-priming centrifugal pumps
  • Mag drive pumps
  • Vertical turbine pumps
  • Air-operated diaphragm pumps
  • Other rotating equipment including gearboxes, blowers, motors, valves, and mixers

*Gorman-Rupp is the primary pump line supported by this service center.
What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Lead and work alongside a small team of mechanics in the repair and rebuild of industrial pumps and rotating equipment
  • Perform tear-downs, inspections, troubleshooting, rebuilds, and testing of pumps and rotating equipment
  • Help diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repair approach and scope
  • Review repair work to help ensure quality, workmanship, and OEM-standard repairs
  • Support and develop less experienced mechanics through day-to-day training and oversight
  • Assist with field troubleshooting, equipment installation, startup, and light mechanical repair work as needed
  • Help maintain shop organization, workflow, and accountability on the floor
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment
  • Coordinate internally with repair coordination and service leadership as needed to keep work moving efficiently

Please note : This is a hands-on industrial pump repair & rebuild role within an OEM-authorized service center - not a production, facilities maintenance, or purely administrative supervisor position.
Why Join Fischer/Tencarva
  • Day shift, Monday-Friday schedule; occasional evenings or weekends only for customer emergencies
  • Long-term company stability - Tencarva has never had a layoff and does not manage downturns by cutting people
  • Stable, steady workload - not seasonal or project-based
  • Primarily shop-based role with occasional field service work
  • Opportunity to lead a small team while still staying hands-on technically
  • Big-company resources with a small-shop feel
  • Family-oriented culture that respects life outside of work
  • We take pride in doing quality work and standing behind our repairs/remans. While we move with urgency for our customers, we do not run a high-pressure production shop or sacrifice quality for speed. Expectations are high, but realistic and sustainable.

Benefits include profit sharing via 401(k), paid time off (including 10 holidays), and insurance (including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life)
Requirements
Technical Background
  • Strong hands-on experience repairing and rebuilding industrial pumps and rotating equipment
  • Ability to independently manage tear-downs, inspections, troubleshooting, rebuilds, and testing
  • Experience with centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, self-priming pumps, and similar rotating equipment strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with laser alignment, bearings, mechanical seals, and precision measurement tools
  • Capable of reading and understanding parts diagrams, mechanical drawings, and repair documentation
  • Experience with gearboxes, blowers, mixers, valves, or related rotating equipment is a plus
  • Industrial millwright or rotating equipment service backgrounds are highly relevant

Leadership & Shop Environment
  • Prior experience leading, supervising, training, or mentoring mechanics preferred
  • Comfortable leading from the floor in a hands-on shop environment
  • Strong ownership, organization, and follow-through
  • Ability to maintain quality and accountability while balancing multiple jobs and priorities
  • Able to set the tone on the shop floor through work ethic, urgency, and workmanship
  • Experience in an OEM-authorized repair center, industrial service center, or rotating equipment shop environment is a plus

Relevant Experience Backgrounds
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
  • Industrial pump repair and rebuild
  • Centrifugal pump repair (ANSI/API)

  • Self-priming pump rebuild
  • AODD pump repair

  • Mechanical seal replacement
  • Bearing and shaft repair
  • Laser alignment
  • Industrial millwright or rotating equipment service backgrounds

*Candidates coming from pump distributors, OEM-authorized repair centers, industrial service centers, rotating equipment shops, or millwright environments with hands-on pump rebuild experience are encouraged to apply
