Weekend Industrial Design information

What is the difference between Weekend Industrial Design vs Part-Time Industrial Design?

AspectWeekend Industrial DesignPart-Time Industrial Design
Work SchedulePrimarily weekends, limited hoursFlexible hours, including weekdays and weekends
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in industrial design or related fieldSame as Weekend Industrial Design, often with portfolio review
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client sites, or remoteSimilar environments, often remote or freelance
Industry UsageCommon in freelance or consulting rolesUsed by professionals balancing other commitments

Weekend Industrial Design involves working primarily on weekends with limited hours, often in freelance or consulting roles. Part-Time Industrial Design offers more flexible scheduling, including weekdays, suitable for those balancing other jobs or commitments. Both roles require similar credentials and work environments, but differ mainly in scheduling flexibility and usage context.

Is there a demand for weekend industrial designers?

Weekend industrial designers are in limited demand, as most design roles are full-time and project-based. However, freelance or part-time opportunities may exist for those with specialized skills in CAD software and prototyping, especially in startups or small businesses seeking flexible schedules.

Where do weekend industrial designers get paid the most?

Weekend industrial designers tend to earn higher wages in regions with a strong manufacturing or design industry presence, such as major metropolitan areas or regions with a high cost of living. Compensation can also vary based on experience, specialization, and the complexity of projects, with freelance or contract work often paying more per hour than part-time employment. Overall, locations with a higher demand for industrial design services typically offer higher pay rates for weekend work.

Job description

We are the people who give possibilities purpose

BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health is our Purpose, and it's no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us-from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year-to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.

Job Description

Purpose

BD UCC is establishing Industrial Designer capability for user-centered product design across its platforms. This role bridges aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, and engineering feasibility to deliver products that are intuitive, differentiated, and manufacturable. This individual will embed industrial design best practices into the product development lifecycle - from early-stage innovation through new product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Industrial Design Leadership: Serve as the industrial design subject matter expert across all four UCC platforms. Establish and spread best practices, design standards, and a cohesive UCC design language.

  • User Research: Plan and conduct generative user research to understand needs, workflows, use environments, and unmet opportunities. Synthesize insights from observation, interviews, and usability feedback to inform design direction and customer requirements.

  • User-Centered Concept Development and Visualization: Lead concept generation from user and market insights. Translate user needs into product form through sketching, rendering, and prototyping.

  • Human Factors Support: Collaborate with Human Factors Engineering (HFE) through generative, formative and summative usability studies.

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Partner with mechanical engineering and manufacturing to ensure design intent translates into producible components.

Required Qualifications

  • BS Industrial Design, Product Design, or closely related engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of professional industrial design experience.

Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive design decisions with minimal oversight.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills; able to influence without authority across multiple business units.

  • Strong hand-sketching and visual communication skills.

  • Proficiency in 3-D CAD Modeling [ie SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo].

  • Proficiency in visualization/rendering software (ie KeyShot).

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (ie Illustrator, Photoshop).

  • Hands-on prototyping experience (3D printing, foam/clay modeling, soft goods mockups).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer products.

  • Experience integrated sensors, wearables, or smart clothing,

  • Experience with user research methods (contextual inquiry, ethnography, usability testing).

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes: injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, over-molding, mechanical assembly.

At BD, we prioritize on-site collaboration because we believe it fosters creativity, innovation, and effective problem-solving, which are essential in the fast-paced healthcare industry. For most roles, we require a minimum of 4 days of in-office presence per week to maintain our culture of excellence and ensure smooth operations, while also recognizing the importance of flexibility and work-life balance.

For certain roles at BD, employment is contingent upon the Company's receipt of sufficient proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In some locations, testing for COVID-19 may be available and/or required. Consistent with BD's Workplace Accommodations Policy, requests for accommodation will be considered pursuant to applicable law.

Why Join Us?

To find purpose in the possibilities, we need people who can see the bigger picture, who understand the human story that underpins everything we do. We welcome people with the imagination and drive to help us reinvent the future of healthcare. At BD, you'll discover a culture in which you can learn, grow and thrive.

We believe that when people connect in person, we learn faster, collaborate more deeply, and build a stronger culture. Join us and enjoy a culture where face-to-face collaboration supports your learning, your progress, and your success.
