Weekend Indie Game Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend indie game developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Indie Game Developer, you need proficiency in game design, programming (commonly with engines like Unity or Unreal), and a solid understanding of gameplay mechanics, often self-taught or supported by online courses. Familiarity with development tools such as Git for version control, graphic/audio editing software, and asset marketplaces is typical. Creativity, self-motivation, and strong problem-solving skills set standout developers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently creating engaging games within limited timeframes and resources, enabling continual progress despite part-time constraints.

What are some common challenges weekend indie game developers face when balancing development with other commitments?

Weekend Indie Game Developers often juggle game creation alongside full-time jobs or studies, making time management a significant challenge. Setting realistic goals, prioritizing tasks, and maintaining motivation during limited hours are essential for steady progress. Collaboration can also be tricky, as team members may have differing availability, so clear communication and the use of project management tools become vital. Despite these hurdles, the flexibility of indie development allows for creative freedom and skill growth at one's own pace.

What is a weekend indie game developer?

Weekend indie game developers are individuals who create video games independently, typically working on their projects during weekends or in their free time outside of regular employment. They often handle multiple aspects of game development, including programming, design, art, and marketing, due to limited resources. These developers are usually motivated by passion and creativity rather than commercial gain, and they may release their games on platforms like itch.io or Steam. Weekend indie developers form a vibrant part of the indie game community, contributing unique and experimental games.

Job description

Overview We're seeking an Engineering Technician to support the operation, troubleshooting, and sustainment of hardware simulators and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbeds in both laboratory and field environments. You will be hands-on with real equipment; setting up systems, running test scenarios, collecting and validating data, and ensuring simulator availability for customer demos, developmental testing, and field events. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work, disciplined execution, and fast-paced troubleshooting, from cable-level issues and timing faults to configuration control and field logistics. Pay Range $85,000 - $163,000 The pay range for this position is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, geographic location, and any applicable laws. Responsibilities * Operate hardware simulators and HIL testbeds in the lab and during field deployments; execute test plans and scenarios safely and repeatably. * Perform system setup and teardown: rack integration, power-up/power-down procedures, cabling/harnessing, configuration loading, and pre-test checks. * Monitor simulator health during runs (telemetry, logs, built-in tests); identify anomalies and take corrective action to keep events on track. * Troubleshoot hardware and integration issues across power, I/O, networking, timing, and sensors/actuators; coordinate fixes with engineering teams. * Calibrate and verify simulator outputs/inputs using lab instruments (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, DMM, power supplies) and documented procedures. * Maintain configuration control: versions, wiring diagrams, asset inventory, spares, and change tracking for lab and field baselines. * Collect, label, and validate test data; produce run notes, quick-look results, and issue summaries for after-action reviews. * Support logistics for field events: packing, transport, site setup, environmental checks, and compliance with customer/site safety rules. * Contribute to documentation: operator checklists, test procedures, troubleshooting guides, and training materials. Qualifications * Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, Computer Technology, or a related technical field; or equivalent military training, technical certification, or practical experience. * 2 years of experience in a hands-on technical role such as engineering technician, electronics technician, test technician, simulator operator, or similar. * Working knowledge of common interfaces and networks (Ethernet, serial/UART, CAN, GPIO; SPI/I2C a plus). * Proficiency with Windows and/or Linux; comfortable with command line tools and basic scripting for setup/log collection (Python/Bash helpful). * Experience troubleshooting with standard lab tools (DMM, oscilloscope, logic analyzer) and interpreting logs/telemetry. * Comfort with cables/harnesses, connectors, rack equipment, and safe power practices; able to follow detailed procedures and checklists. * Strong documentation habits and communication skills; able to produce clear run notes and concise issue reports. * Ability and willingness to travel for field events and work flexible hours during test windows (including early/late shifts or occasional weekends as required). Nice to have * Experience with HIL environments, automated test stands, or simulator operation for complex systems. * RF/EW/sensors experience; familiarity with timing/synchronization, data acquisition, or telemetry systems. * Hands-on electronics skills: reading schematics, basic rework/repair, harness fabrication, connector pinouts. * Scripting/automation to streamline operations (Python, Bash, PowerShell) and basic data triage/quick-look plots. * Experience with environmental and field constraints (mobile racks, generators, shelters, ruggedized equipment). Field readiness * Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs and safely handle racks/cases with appropriate equipment and team support. * Ability to work outdoors or in varying environments during field tests (temperature, dust, noise). * Valid driver's license. Security requirements * Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required * Clearance: Active Secret required About i3 i3 is a technically diverse, 100% team member owned business, headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama specializing in missile and aviation systems engineering and logistic services, electronic warfare and electromagnetic effects analysis, UAS system integration and flight operations, full lifecycle C5ISR engineering services, cybersecurity and IT/IA innovative solutions and virtual training, simulation & serious game development and implementation.
