CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:  HVAC Apprentice

Job Summary:

The HVAC Apprentice is a position designed to provide recent graduates with on-the-job training and instruction over a reasonable time period which allows this apprentice to become an effective HVAC technician. This role will work under an experienced HVAC expert, who seeks to demonstrate, train, mentor, and supervise the individual in this position. The apprentice will have an opportunity to work in each HVAC division including residential installation, residential service, commercial installation, and commercial service. This will give the apprentice a better idea of which career route to pursue. After the probationary apprentice period, once placed in a specific division, you will be trained in detail all aspects of that position. After which you will be placed in your own service van.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Services, maintains, and repairs residential and commercial HVAC systems under experienced HVAC Technician supervision
  • Learns to determine general condition of HVAC systems, troubleshoots HVAC malfunctions, and determines extent of necessary repairs, under the guidance of an experienced HVAC Technician
  • Always maintains a neat work area and inspects that area for cleanliness after completion of each job
  • Conveys a safety-conscious attitude, both on the job and while driving
  • Wears floor savers while in the client’s home
  • Helps maintains company vehicle, ensures that it is always clean on both the inside and the outside
  • Performs other related duties, as required

 Education and Experience:

Tom's is currently looking for hard-working, career-oriented employees interested in a career in the HVAC industry.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, due to insurance coverage needs
  • One year of experience in construction, maintenance, or other trades setting; and
  • High School Diploma, GED and/or a certification from an accredited technical school, or
    • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Tom's Management Team.
  • Successful applicants will need to pass a background and drug screening. 
  • Must have a current, valid Texas Driver's License (with a clear or near clear driving record)
  • Current TDLR, and EPA certification
  • Candidates are encouraged to provide a letter of recommendation from former employers and/or instructors. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to:
    • Bend or twist body, 90 degrees in either direction
    • Stand on all surfaces for long periods of time
    • Work in tight, uncomfortable spaces such as hot attics
    • Squat and touch floor with hands
    • Use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools and/or controls
    • Climb ladder, scaffolds and/or poles safely
    • Use repetitive motions
    • Walk and/or run for long periods of time
    • Lift up to 50 lbs., in addition to body weight
    • Reach over head with ease
    • Access rooftops with extension or fixed ladders at heights of up to 50 feet, as needed
    • Complete job with safety in mind for all involved and communicate any issues to the assigned SME that could lead to safety concerns prior to completing tasks
    • Must be able to physically climb ladders and lift/pull 60 lbs.
    • Work long hours during peak heating and cooling seasons, including extreme heat, extreme cold, and inclement weather
