Job Title: General Laborer

Work Location: Blackstone, VA

Labor Category: Non-Exempt | CBA

Clearance Level: Secret

Pay Rate: $20.99 per hour

Health & Welfare: $8.00 per hour

Hours: 2nd shift -  Monday through Friday, 2:00 PM - 10:45 PM

Shift Assignments are at the discretion of site management: 

  • 1st shift - base hourly rate. 
  • 2nd shift - base hourly rate plus a 5% shift differential.
  • 3rd shift - base hourly rate plus a 10% shift differential.

About the Role 

The Laborer Grounds Maintenance performs various labor tasks to maintain FASTC property.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Maintains grounds of FASTC property.
  • Cut grass, using walking-type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs.).
  • Utilize weed eater to cut grass or weeds in ditches, ammunition mounds, and berms with high inclines. Frequently lift and carry lawn equipment.
  • Trim hedges and edges around walks, flowerbeds, and wells, using hedge trimmers, clippers and edging tools, prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth, using shears and other hand tools, sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide.
  • Planting grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Watering lawn and shrubs during dry periods, using hose or activating sprinkler system.
  • Rake, bag, and remove leaves and other natural debris. 
  • Removing snow from walks, driveways, roads, or parking lots, using shovel and snow blower.
  • Spreads salt on walkways and other areas.
  • Repairing and painting fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildings. 
  • Assists in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment, and may clean comfort stations, offices workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping and polishing
  • Tie down equipment and cargo loads on stake bed trucks and flatbed trailers.
  • Hand weed-pulling, raking, shoveling, and mulching landscapes.
  • May drive ATV's, Kubota's and other small equipment or Tractors.
  • Use hand and arm signals to direct other operators.
  • Performs all assigned duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, and directives. 
  • Consistently produces quality products and service. 
  • Completes all training within required timeline. 
  • Performs all work in a safe and secure manner. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.   
  • Experience and/or training providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the tasks of the position. Some specialized experience preferred and/or formal vocational/technical training. 
  • Experience in operating small trucks and grounds equipment. 
  • Must possess the ability to work in a team or alone and be able to change jobs on short notice. 
  • Ability to follow basic operating instructions. 
  • Reliable transportation to the worksite required. 
  • Must have knowledge of worksite safety, occupational hazards and standard safety practices.  
  • Must have a basic knowledge of custodial, recycling, and working with hazardous materials. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with others.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and a safe driving record, in accordance with company policy, to operate vehicles or equipment.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Physical requirements include (but are not limited to) the ability to lift 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, carrying, stooping, bending, squatting, and reaching.
  • Must be able to work on-call, alternate, and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment handling multiple tasks in a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules under pressure of deadlines while maintaining acceptable performance standards. 
  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around various hazards.
