Job description

Access Services Assistant

The Access Services Assistant facilitates access to library materials for students, faculty, staff, and other library users at the John T. Richardson Library on the Lincoln Park campus. This includes providing circulation services and general assistance at the Access Services desk and serving as the supervisor-on-duty in the library on evenings and weekends. The Access Services Assistant provides supplemental support to other core departmental functions, including stacks maintenance, course reserves, and interlibrary loan. This position reports to the Head of Access Services.

The Access Services Assistant works in a highly supportive, collegial culture that encourages active participation in meaningful and valuable skills training and professional development. This includes training workshops, committee memberships, and engagement in programs that support the Library's mission and its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility goals, while building connections and partnerships across DePaul's wider academic and user community.

What You'll Do:

  • Provides services to students, faculty, and other library users at the Access Services desk including borrowing, renewal, and return of library materials and loanable technology; basic technical support for printing, scanning, and photocopying; assistance with room reservations within the library; and general directional assistance.
  • Acts as the supervisor-on-duty in the library on evenings and weekends per an assigned schedule, including supervising student staff and communicating information about library policies and procedures to users as necessary.
  • Provides supplemental support for other core Access Services functions, including stacks maintenance, course reserves, and interlibrary loan.
  • Assists the Circulation Supervisor in the onboarding, training, and supervision of new student staff.
  • Performs library opening and/or closing procedures.
  • Reports any operations, facility, or staff issues to the Head of Access Services at the end of each shift.
  • Directly supervises student assistants on evenings and weekends.
  • This position will be based primarily at the John T. Richardson Library on the Lincoln Park campus. The position may require occasional travel to DePaul's Loop campus.
  • This position is currently scheduled 15-25 hours per week during assigned weekday, evening and/or weekend shifts through the academic year.
  • Schedules are adjusted quarterly based on staffing and service hours. Altered hours may occur during summer and intersessions between academic quarters.

What You'll Need:

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Experience providing customer service required.
  • Previous library experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • General administrative experience preferred.
  • Availability to work evenings (4pm-midnight) and weekends required.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (email, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace) required.
  • Experience with Alma or other integrated library systems (ILS) preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with a high level of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultural identities and foster an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is: $18.70/hr

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
