Job description

Overview: Reporting to the Superintendent, this position assists with the operation of the golf course operation and maintenance activities including: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. The Assistant Superintendent works to create an environment where staff is involved and enthusiastic, with open communications and respect for themselves, members, guests and the property.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all phases of Golf Maintenance and Agronomic operations, cost control, and personnel.
  • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Superintendent on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
  • Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds.
  • May design landscape plans for facility grounds and implements changes.
  • Administers and enforces member / guest rules, regulations and policies for staff.
  • Supports from the landscape function with members/ guest events.
  • Works closely with the Superintendent to operate the facility maintenance in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
  • Assists with hiring and training staff to include helping to maintain training and performance documentation
  • Ensures irrigation systems are operational, ensures repairs are made as well as irrigation duties are being performed to keep the landscape up to standard
  • Oversees and performs general maintenance including but not limited to: mowing, raking, blowing, mulching, sod work, aerification and set up
  • Ensures watering grounds duties are performed as required
  • Supervises 20 or more employees assigning duties
  • Reviews direct reports
  • Works with vendors and negotiates contracts
  • Monitors labor expenses to budget
  • Ensures employees are trained in safe work procedures and work is performed in a safe manner by providing technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is working within OSHA, club safety, state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
  • Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Ability to follow written instructions
  • Ability to operate general maintenance equipment
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to hand dig in various climatic conditions (hot/cold temperatures)
  • Ability to lift, push, pull a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, withstand constant movement of extremities, bend at waist and perform repetitive hand, wrist and foot action, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures and outside weather conditions (heat/cold, rain/snow) for up to eight hour shift
  • Good hand/eye/foot coordination
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Ability to obtain VA pesticide license within 90 days
  • Associate degree in Agronomy (Turf) OR 3 years of golf course experience, required
  • Experience applying fertilizers and chemicals with boom type sprayers
  • Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy (Turf) or 3 years of golf course experience, preferred
  • Irrigation experience, preferred
  • Supervisor experience preferred
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends and holidays as required
