What is a Weekend GIS?

A Weekend GIS job involves working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on weekends, typically for data analysis, mapping, or spatial data management tasks. These roles may be part-time or contract-based and are common in industries like environmental science, urban planning, or emergency response. Responsibilities can include updating maps, analyzing spatial data, or supporting GIS projects that require weekend availability.

What are the typical work responsibilities and projects for a Weekend GIS?

Weekend GIS Specialists are often tasked with maintaining and updating geospatial databases, creating detailed maps, and conducting spatial analyses to support various departments or clients. Their responsibilities may include data collection using GPS, processing satellite imagery, and preparing reports or visualizations for ongoing projects. They frequently collaborate with city planners, environmental scientists, or engineers to meet project goals within tight weekend deadlines. This role is ideal for professionals seeking a flexible schedule and the opportunity to contribute to important initiatives, even outside of standard business hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weekend GIS position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Specialist, candidates need a solid background in GIS concepts, spatial analysis, and mapping, typically supported by a degree in geography, environmental science, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and remote sensing tools, along with certifications in GIS, is often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective time management are crucial soft skills for success. These skills enable Weekend GIS professionals to efficiently collect, analyze, and present geospatial data, supporting timely project delivery and decision-making.

Job description

The Diallo Group (TDG) is seeking a GIS Specialist to support our federal planning and design practice from our Alexandria, Virginia office.
This position is ideal for a GIS professional who understands that GIS within a planning practice extends beyond map production. We are seeking someone capable of using geospatial information to support planning analysis, alternatives development, infrastructure assessments, facility planning, and client decision-making.
Responsibilities
• Develop GIS maps, exhibits, dashboards, databases, and analytical products supporting federal planning projects.
• Perform spatial analysis for land use, facilities, infrastructure, transportation, environmental constraints, development suitability, and planning alternatives.
• Support Area Development Plans, Installation Development Plans, facility programming, BFRs, DD Form 1391s, and other planning studies.
• Prepare existing-conditions, constraints, opportunities, alternatives, and preferred-development-plan exhibits.
• Manage and maintain project GIS databases and geospatial datasets.
• Coordinate GIS products with planners, engineers, architects, and landscape architects.
• Participate in planning charrettes and support real-time mapping and analysis when required.
• Produce high-quality graphics and maps for reports, presentations, and client briefings.
• Conduct QA/QC of spatial data and mapping deliverables.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Planning, Urban Studies, Environmental Science, or a related discipline preferred.
3+ years of professional GIS experience preferred.
• Experience working within an urban planning, master planning, architecture/engineering, or federal consulting environment strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Pro and related GIS applications.
• Experience with spatial analysis, geodatabases, cartography, and data management.
• Federal or DoD project experience is highly desirable.
• Understanding of planning concepts and the ability to translate planning information into clear visual products.
• GIS certification is not required.
Location: Alexandria, Virginia — In Office
Employment: Part-Time / Project-Based, with potential for increased hours based on workload
TDG is particularly interested in GIS professionals who enjoy working directly alongside planners and designers and can contribute analytically—not simply produce maps.
Important Notices

  • This position is contingent upon our company being awarded the contract with DOW.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
