Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW Sanctuary’s Community Law Project (CLP)  is seeking a Supervising Attorney to supervise a team of attorneys in family law ,matters including custody, visitation, order of protection, child support, and contested divorces. The Supervising Attorney will represent clients in all 5 boroughs and engage in legal advocacy to effectuate systemic change. The Supervising Attorney will also train, supervise and mentor staff attorney(s), project assistants, pro bono attorneys and interns on family law matters.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced family law attorney with strong litigation, advocacy and management skills, who is passionate about asserting the rights of survivors of gender-based violence. The Supervising Attorney will also staff the Legal helpline and participate in community based organizations (CBO) legal clinics.   RESPONSIBILITIES  Represent survivors of gender-based violence in complex family law matters, including custody, visitation, order of protection, support and contested divorces. Provide legal advocacy on behalf of survivors of gender-based violence;  Train, supervise and mentor CLP’s staff, including probono attorneys, interns and volunteers;  Develop and provide internal and external family law trainings and updates to staff, Sanctuary’s Board of Directors and other agency committees, clients, and other community-based organizations, as needed and as requested;  Collaborate with other projects within the legal center, and departments throughout the agency, on family law matters, and refer clients for assistance with other legal issues, or Clinical or case management needs;  Staff the Legal helpline;  Participate in rotation of Legal Clinics with Community Based Organizations (CBO’s);  Participate in outreach and training in all 5 boroughs;  Perform other department or agency-related duties or special projects, as directed by the Sr.

Director and the Sr. Deputy Director of the Legal Center. REQUIREMENTS J.D. AND Admission to the New York State Bar.  At least between 5 -7 years of experience representing clients in Family and Supreme Courts, including complex custody and matrimonial cases.  Demonstrated ability to train, supervise and manage a team.  Strong public speaking, communication, time management, organization, and research and writing skills. Ability to work independently.
