How much do weekend gardener jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for weekend gardener in the United States is $21.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $24.28 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend gardeners, and how can they be managed effectively?

Weekend gardeners often face the challenge of limited time to complete tasks such as weeding, planting, and lawn care, which can lead to a backlog of work if not managed efficiently. Prioritizing tasks based on seasonality and plant needs, and using time-saving tools or techniques, can help maximize productivity. Additionally, weather variability on weekends may require flexibility in planning, so having a list of both indoor and outdoor gardening activities can ensure progress regardless of conditions. Collaboration with other team members or homeowners for clear communication about expectations and priorities is also key to maintaining a well-kept garden.

What are weekend gardeners?

Weekend gardeners are individuals who tend to gardens, lawns, and outdoor plants primarily during weekends. They may work for residential clients, community gardens, or public spaces, performing tasks such as planting, weeding, pruning, watering, and general garden maintenance. This role is ideal for those who enjoy working outdoors and have a flexible schedule that allows for weekend work. Weekend gardeners may work independently or as part of a landscaping team, and their responsibilities can vary depending on the season and the specific needs of each garden.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Gardener, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Gardener, you need a basic understanding of horticulture, plant care, and landscaping techniques, often supported by hands-on experience or relevant short courses. Familiarity with gardening tools, irrigation systems, and organic or chemical fertilizers is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and a passion for working outdoors are important soft skills. These abilities ensure healthy plant growth, efficient garden maintenance, and a visually appealing outdoor environment.

We're hiring for our seasonal garden center team now, with positions running February through October. Whether you want to work hands-on with annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees; serve customers as a nursery expert; or keep our operations humming behind the scenes - there's a spot for you here.

Why Gardener's Supply?

Gardener's Supply Company is a New England institution. Founded in Burlington, Vermont, we've spent decades connecting gardeners with the highest-quality plants, seeds, tools, and know-how, and our garden centers are known across Vermont for their welcoming atmosphere and deep plant expertise.

Perks include:

Generous employee discount on garden center products and plants

Flexible scheduling: part-time and full-time options, morning and evening shifts available

Supportive, upbeat team environment

Hands-on horticulture and plant knowledge - skills you keep forever

Opportunity to transition to a year-round role based on performance and business needs

About the Role

This is a seasonal position running February through October. Our peak season - April through June - is our most exciting time of year, with the garden center buzzing with customers searching for annuals, perennials, vegetable starts, shrubs, trees, and more. High energy and team collaboration are essential during this stretch.

Note: Time-off requests cannot be accommodated during the April-June peak period.

Most positions require weekend availability and the ability to lift 30-70 pounds. Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions is a must.

No plant expertise? No problem - we're happy to train motivated, enthusiastic people who bring a great attitude and a willingness to learn.

Departments - Find Your Fit

We're hiring across five areas of our garden center operations. Many team members work across multiple departments depending on the day's needs.

- Customer Service Team -

Do you enjoy connecting with people and creating a great experience? Our Customer Service team is the heartbeat of our garden center. You'll assist customers across all departments, operate POS/cash register systems, promote our Gardener's Club loyalty program, and make sure every visitor leaves happy.

Great fit for: people-oriented individuals who thrive in a fast-paced retail environment. Gardening knowledge is a bonus but not required.

- Green Goods Team -

This is the role for plant lovers. Work hands-on every day with annuals, perennials, vegetables, shrubs, and trees across our nursery and outdoor sales areas. You'll provide plant care, assist customers with selections, and share your horticulture knowledge to help gardeners find exactly what they're looking for.

Great fit for: anyone with a passion for plants, greenery, and horticulture - from beginners to experienced nursery workers.

- Operations Team -

Support the backbone of our garden center by coordinating with our delivery, wholesale, and green goods teams to keep everything running smoothly. Heavy equipment experience is a plus. Outstanding customer service skills are essential, as you'll interact with both retail and wholesale customers.

Great fit for: organized, dependable team players comfortable working in a dynamic, physical environment.

- Wholesale Team -

Help landscape professionals, contractors, and nursery buyers find exactly what they need to create stunning outdoor spaces. You'll bring strong product knowledge of trees, shrubs, and landscaping plants to assist trade customers with larger orders and specialized requests.

Great fit for: candidates with at least one year of nursery or landscaping experience and solid knowledge of landscape plants.

- Inventory Team -

Keep our garden center stocked, organized, and ready for customers. You'll unload deliveries, receive and process new product shipments, organize stock, and collaborate with the service teams to ensure every plant, bag of soil, and garden tool is perfectly placed.

Great fit for: detail-oriented people with strong organizational skills and a love of systems and order.
