Job description

28Freight is a Boston-based expedited and asset-based logistics company serving customers throughout New England. We operate with a mix of company-owned tractor trailers and independent contractors, delivering time-sensitive, specialized freight with reliability and care. Our success depends on precision, communication, and customer trust — and at the center of that operation is our Dispatch Team.

We are growing rapidly and are looking for a Dispatcher who is motivated, detail-oriented, and passionate about providing excellent service. This is not just a seat-filling role — Dispatch is the heartbeat of our operation, and you will have a direct hand in ensuring our freight moves on time, our drivers are supported, and our customers remain satisfied.

Role Overview

The Dispatcher at 28Freight is responsible for managing the daily movement of freight, assigning work to Trade Service Providers (TSPs), communicating with customers, and keeping jobs compliant and on schedule. This role requires a blend of operational expertise, customer service excellence, and problem-solving under pressure.

You will serve as the key link between our customers, drivers, and internal teams — acting as both a traffic controller and a problem solver.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Dispatch & Coordination

  • Assign and communicate pickup/delivery instructions to drivers and Trade Service Providers (TSPs).
  • Continuously monitor the dispatch board for changes, delays, and service risks; take action immediately to minimize impacts.
  • Balance multiple shipments and priorities while ensuring efficiency, timeliness, and accuracy.
  • Provide real-time updates to Customer Service, sales, and leadership teams regarding driver status, ETAs, and exceptions.
  • Actively participate in the on-call rotation to ensure around-the-clock support when required.

Planning & Scheduling

  • Assist in developing next-day driver schedules, including load assignments and route planning.
  • Support weekend coverage and ensure TSP availability for critical time-sensitive freight.
  • Anticipate capacity issues during peak times, proactively building contingency plans to prevent service failures.

Documentation & Accuracy

  • Verify job tickets contain all required information before closure.
  • Ensure PRO numbers are accurately completed and attached to tickets.
  • Capture and log TSP delay information, escalating to leadership when delays may impact customers.
  • Transfer tickets to the 3PL department when outside resources are needed.

Compliance & TSA/STA Oversight

  • Ensure all drivers and TSPs remain TSA/STA compliant before assigning work.
  • Manage TSA/STA renewals and track expiration timelines.
  • Communicate TSA/STA requirements and updates to TSPs to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintain strict adherence to all federal, state, and company-level compliance policies.

Customer & Team Collaboration

  • Partner with Customer Service to ensure smooth customer communication and issue resolution.
  • Build strong working relationships with drivers, TSPs, and internal teams to improve efficiency and service quality.
  • Represent 28Freight in a professional and respectful manner when communicating with customers, partners, and team members.
  • Provide leadership with feedback on operational improvements and system enhancements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required; additional education or certifications in logistics a plus.
  • Prior experience in dispatch, fleet management, or transportation operations required (1–3 years minimum).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to provide clear, professional instructions.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, TMS platforms, and EDI systems.
  • Ability to remain calm, organized, and effective under pressure — especially in fast-paced or high-stress situations.
  • Proactive problem-solving ability with a solution-focused mindset.
  • Customer-focused, with a track record of delivering exceptional service.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or on-call shifts as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions in compliance with ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
  • Regular, punctual attendance is essential.
  • Ability to talk, listen, and communicate clearly on the phone and via radio systems.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

  • Proactive problem solvers who anticipate challenges before they happen.
  • Clear communicators who keep both drivers and customers informed.
  • Detail-oriented professionals who ensure accuracy in tickets, compliance, and reporting.
  • Flexible and adaptable individuals who can adjust to the unpredictable nature of freight logistics.
  • Customer champions who understand that every decision impacts service and satisfaction.
