Weekend Fpga Engineer information

What does a weekend FPGA engineer do?

A Weekend FPGA Engineer is responsible for designing, testing, and implementing Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) solutions, typically working on a part-time or contract basis during weekends. Their main tasks include developing hardware description language (HDL) code, simulating circuit designs, and troubleshooting FPGA implementations. These engineers often collaborate remotely with teams, contributing to ongoing projects that require flexible scheduling or accelerated timelines. Their expertise is vital in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, and consumer electronics where custom hardware solutions are in demand.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend FPGA engineer?

To excel as a Weekend FPGA Engineer, you typically need a solid background in digital design, hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog, and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, and experience with simulation and debugging platforms, are crucial. Strong problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you efficiently deliver quality work within limited weekend hours. These capabilities ensure that you can independently develop, test, and deploy FPGA solutions while collaborating effectively with remote or asynchronous teams.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend FPGA engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload within limited hours?

Weekend FPGA Engineers often face the challenge of condensing complex design and debugging tasks into fewer, more focused work sessions. Since they typically collaborate with teams that may operate during traditional weekday hours, clear communication and thorough documentation are essential to ensure continuity and avoid delays. To manage their workload efficiently, it's important to prioritize tasks, set realistic milestones, and leverage version control systems for seamless handoffs. Proactive planning and regular check-ins with the main engineering team can significantly enhance productivity and integration.

What is the difference between Weekend Fpga Engineer vs Part-Time FPGA Developer?

AspectWeekend Fpga EngineerPart-Time FPGA Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, FPGA design certificationsSimilar credentials, often with additional certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentTypically on-site or remote, project-based tasks during weekendsFlexible hours, project-specific, often remote
Industry UsageElectronics, telecommunications, aerospaceElectronics, embedded systems, research
Search IntentWeekend FPGA engineering jobs, part-time FPGA roles

The main difference is that Weekend Fpga Engineers usually work on specific projects during weekends, often in a more structured environment, while Part-Time FPGA Developers have flexible schedules and may work on various projects remotely. Both roles require similar skills and certifications, but their work arrangements differ.

Job description

ScioTeq, a leading brand in high performance, high quality rugged displays and computers, has been serving the defense and security community around the world for over 35 years. Today's military requires leading edge computing and display capabilities in all their vehicles. ScioTeq products are designed to not only meet high tech performance requirements but also survive incredibly harsh and extreme environments.
ScioTeq offers a small company feel while projecting a big company presence. Our engineering work is very hands-on and collaborative as we design, prototype, test, and industrialize computing products for a variety of applications and customers. We are expanding our engineering team and are looking for an experienced FPGA firmware design engineer who can join our team in Duluth, Georgia. If you have strong firmware design abilities and the interpersonal skills needed to effectively collaborate and support our product development activities, then read on.
ScioTeq Rugged Smart Display and Computer products are designed to provide high computing and video processing performance in extreme operating environments governed by MIL STD and EN military specifications. Designed with the latest commercially available CPU modules, we use FPGA's to handle HMI interfaces, coordinate I/O and perform low latency video processing. These products are rarely sold as "off the shelf" products. Customers typically require customization for their specific applications and requirements. This often requires creative problem solving, coordination with hardware and software engineers, and adaptable firmware designs. The FPGA Firmware Engineer has the following main responsibilities:
โ€ข FPGA firmware implementation of feature requirements for new products and custom features
โ€ข Development of FPGA based video processing algorithms
โ€ข Develop and execute simulation testbenches for functional verification
โ€ข Troubleshooting and problem resolution for existing product issues
โ€ข Collaborate with PCB/hardware engineers on pinout, power, and signal integrity requirements
โ€ข Write and maintain design documentation, including block diagrams and interface specifications
โ€ข Provide firmware configuration management and release schedules
โ€ข Research toward related emerging FPGA technologies and tools
Qualifications
โ€ข 5-10 years FPGA firmware design experience
โ€ข BSEE or BSCE required
โ€ข Ability to apply understanding of digital logic design and verification concepts to the development of FPGAs.
โ€ข Proficient with VHDL and/or Verilog
โ€ข Experience with at least one major vendor toolchain (Xilinx/AMD Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus, or Lattice Diamond). Xilinx Vivado preferred.
โ€ข Experience writing simulation test benches and interpreting waveform results
โ€ข Familiarity with common interfaces: SPI, I2C, UART, AXI, PCIe, Ethernet, or similar
โ€ข Experience working in cross-functional product development teams
โ€ข Must be self-motivated with strong work ethic, teachable, and collaborative
