Job description

Facilities Maintenance Mechanic – HVAC

Location: Fareva Richmond, VA
Reports To: Maintenance Manager
 

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance HVAC Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, refrigeration, and related mechanical systems across the facility. This role ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), company SOPs, and Environmental Health & Safety standards. The mechanic supports overall facility reliability by performing preventive maintenance, responding to equipment failures, and collaborating with other maintenance trades and departments.

Key Responsibilities

Preventive Maintenance

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC and mechanical systems including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air compressors, ventilation systems, and building automation equipment
  • Conduct routine operational checks between scheduled maintenance intervals
  • Review equipment manuals and technical documentation to support maintenance activities
  • Coordinate equipment shutdowns with production and facility teams

HVAC Repairs & Service

  • Diagnose and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems
  • Recover, evacuate, recharge, and handle refrigerants in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements
  • Repair leaks and replace defective components
  • Interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical specifications
  • Communicate equipment status, risks, and repair needs to supervisors and team members

Troubleshooting Mechanical Systems

  • Identify and resolve issues with HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, ventilation units, compressed air systems, and building automation controls

Troubleshooting Electrical Components

  • Diagnose and repair faulty breakers, switches, thermostats, fuses, and related control components

Team Support & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other maintenance trades to restore equipment and support facility operations

Additional Duties

  • Support senior HVAC mechanics or maintenance leadership with assigned tasks
  • Drive company vehicles as needed to pick up or deliver parts and equipment

Organizational Relationships

  • Works closely with maintenance mechanics, maintenance leadership, and other facility maintenance groups
  • Partners with production and departmental supervisors to coordinate equipment access and repairs
  • Interfaces with external vendors for troubleshooting, repairs, and service support

Supervision & Accountability

  • May coordinate and oversee the work of external contractors and service vendors on assigned projects

Education & Experience

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Virginia State Journeyman HVAC License
  • EPA Refrigeration Certification

Technical Skills

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Ability to safely operate powered industrial equipment such as forklifts

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights
  • Ability to work outdoors and on rooftops in varying weather conditions
  • Flexibility to work different shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations
